Hi, long time reader, first time poster....

I my 93 bighorn (3.1TD 4jg2) has been leaking oil for a while now, and it seem to be coming from the front of the engine, so i have been led to believe that it is the front crank seal that is causing me and my driveway the grief.

I have changed the timing belt with not too much hassle, is doing the crank seal much harder.

Are any special tools needed?

I have the manual in PDF format, but all the engines in there seem to be the heavy duty ones with gear driven timing so are wet, and i presume have no need for this seal, and therefore not much help.

My manual only shows the gear version of the 4jg2 as well but the manual for the 4jb1 has a belt drive so assuming its the same it all looks quite easy. The seal is in a retainer that bolts to the block Just need to use liquid gasket on the retainer when put back together

Thanks, if it is the same as in the 4jb1, then it says you need a special tool (page 134 of TF4JE-WE-9791.PDF) can this be substituted with skill. I read somewhere about a PVC pipe or something. What do you use to get the pulley off?

Which pulley?The alternator/aircon/power steering drive pulley can be tapped off after you take out the 4 8mm bolts around the main retaining bolt.To get the cambelt pulley off take out the big bolt in the middle.If the pulley and boss are good ones you'll need a gear puller but I've seen them loose enough to slide off with finger pressure only.Hope this helps.

Been there with the crank pully. Dont know how long the center bolt was loose for but after it fell out the fan pully wore a hole in the timing cover. After we took the fan belt off the 2 pulleys +spacer just fell off. Keyway in the spacer was 5 times larger than it should of been meaning the cambelt pulley was moving back and forwards about 2 teeth. ie far too close to a very expensive repair. Pay very close attention to the torque on this bolt

Just a side note; My front crank seal was leaking at one stage when I had the usual Isuzu crankcase breather problem... fixed that and it stopped leaking. you may put anew seal in that will start leaking too if that is the problem.

So is your crankcase pressurised? Simply test buy taking out the dipstick and put yr finger over the hole and remove.

What is the usual crankcase breather problem and how do you fix it?
My 2.8 has always had a slight leak at the front seal???, well the sump gets a bit of oil under it between oil changes.
Come to think of it, the rear seal may leak too as the belhousing always has a drip hanging so, pressure could be a problem I guess.
