I'm running a standard 2.8 TD and I get 600kms from a 50 ltr tank. I think this is pretty good.
Is fuel economy a good indication of the condition of the engine? I ask because recently I was down at the snow and when starting the engine cold it was blowing a S**t load of smoke, it looked like I was sending some signals. Once the engine warmed it the smoke settled down. Does this normally happen when starting in very cold conditions?

I have gotten 1400kms from $110 so i don't think that is all that bad considering I was running on 30psi tyres - just been told today that my 31x10.5x15 should be running at 36-40psi !!! arrrrrrgh
Is this true? Dunlop ADventurer tyres with 5 - 6 mm tread

A long time ago I saw a formular to work out the correct presure in a tyre depending on its size the load on it and about 5 other things. Unfortuanatly I never kept it but it would solve this forever. As a very crude rule of thumb take the load figure on the side of the tyre and the maximum pressure then callculat this down to 1/4 of the weight of your car (about 500kg each corner) This should be about the presure you should run. If you want ecconomy run harder tyres If you want to stay on the road run slightly softer. Anouther tyre presure check is to take the pressure cold then run 10 km at open road speed If the presure increases less that 4psi they are too hard if it increases more then they are too soft. It works on my wagon at about 25psi but I run 30 to 32psi some people run 36 I think this is too hard Ive never heard anyone running 40 in that size tyre on a Mu

I run 30 psi ( +/- 2 psi ) on all my cars ('04 camry 205/65-15 , '95 niva 215 R 15 , '91 mu 31x 10.5 - 15 ) coz this is recomended tyre presure and I find it most comfortable to drive,any more presure and ride becomes bumpy and uncomfortable.

Factory boost for a 2.8 4bj1t is abot 11psi, i can only get about 550km from 65-70 litres, but then i have 32" tires, a 3" exhaust, snorkle, k&n filter, no egr things, boost between factory and 16psi, and a fuel pump thats been touched !! But man have i got some pick up!! just need to get some more top speed. As for tire pressure i have 32" goodyear wrangler mtr's and run them at 40psi on road and 15 to 20psi offroad. 40psi makes them sing and gives a harder ride but i like it llike that!

Hi Mulover,
What have you done with your dump pipe?
Jimmy.

So you mean my exhaust?? I made a retangular shaped piece that comes off the back of the turbo to miss the oil filter then that goes into 3" tube with a stainless flexi joint and then takes roughly the same path as the factory to the rear , but a bit tighter to the body with a straight through 3" muffler just to make the nosie bearable. Now the turbo spools up something wicked!!!!

Mulover,
Any chance of some pics? I am working out what to do with mine.
Currently have 2.5" Mandrel bent from the dump pipe back with a 3" flexi and one straight through muffler. A lot of places call this from the turbo back but there is still 6 inches or so of dump pipe, which I am told is fairly restrictive.
So I would be keen to see your set up. Avoiding the filter as you mentioned seems to be the biggest obstacle in sizing the dump pipe.
Jimmy.

Hi, I have figures that go back 90000km. The delivery trip from Sydney to Canberra (115 kph) gave 10 lt/100. I changed the air cleaner element and the oil to Penrite Japan Light Truck( Penrites suggestion). Ever since then the figures have been above 9.4lt/100. Typically highway 8.5-8.8 lt/100, backroads 8.2 lt/100, town 8.8 lt/100. Went to Alice springs towing a small pop top van and averaged 13.3 lt/100 towing at the speed limit. My 89 Jackaroo DLX is stock with 320000 km on the clock so I'm very impressed so far. I will do some of the mods described on this site as time and money permit. Thanks to all who contribute so much to the info here. Regards, Al.

Hey there jimmy, i can do pictures, will be few days, and then i have to figure out how to post them but i will be in there replacing the alternator soon so i'll sort something out! If you have the cast piece with the butterfly valve in it is very restrictive, i looked at getting a remote oil filter kit, as now that i have the intercooler on, doing the oil change is a prick of a job!!!!
