Boost controler is a tricky one. Its only done in the quest for more power and the 3.1 has shown some reliability issues when pushed too far. Turbo timer is a good idea but not compulsury. The book says speeds under 80kph no cool down req, 100kph 1 min, High speed or hills towing etc 3 min. In normal use you get these sorts of times without the need for idle down.ie get to destination the last 5 or 10 min is driving through town.

My truck was over 100000km before I fitted one. Many diesel turbos in fleets etc go 5 times this withoutr a turbo timer. As I said 90% of the time it wont give any real benifit as modern turbos are water cooled and use more heat resistant parts. I have a turbo timer but only turn it on when towing or hard hills on a hot day. I do however always let it idle for 30 sec or so before switching off The interewsting bit was that when I climbed under the dash I found all the wires sitting there to attach the timer. Does this mean my truck had a timer and it was taken out or does it mean Mr Isuzu thought about the timer then found out the cost. I dont know this answer

You don't need to use a turbo timer to let the engine run & cool down. In NSW, it's illegal to leave the engine running and the vehicle unattended, so turbo timers are technically only going to stop you from looking at your watch every 20 seconds. Mine has a turbo timer, but I rarely ever use it - just the last km or so is driven barely above idle speed or I sit in the car for a minute before shutting down. Cheers, G.

One point with turbo timers is that if you go off-roading without a snorkel, make sure you switch timer off if doing water/river crossings. If you drop front into a big hole it is important to turn engine off real quick so you don't suck water into motor - in this case having turbo timer set on 3-5 minutes is not a very flash idea.

I thought I was in this situation once but was lucky. Also found the turbo timer wouldnt turn off while the alt lights were on due to wet alternator. Definatly not good. Tide mark in air box was 1.5 cm from top and outlet from airbox had water trails. The next cup of water had a $3000 price tag

You were very lucky - hope you bought a few lotto tickets that day.. There are magic moments of panic when you drop the nose down into some huge hole in the river, the water comes up to the windscreen, the truck's filling up, the fishes are looking in the window (almost) and if you're just a few seconds slow turning the motor off its bye-bye diesel, hello Mr Reconditioner. Not a good time to have a turbo timer set on 5 minutes, let alone a malfunctioning one. Got cupfuls in airbox once and then immediately fitted snorkel - they're a very good insurance policy.
Come to think of it, I've only filled the truck up once in the last couple of years - must be finally learning something! But still v easy to get caught out.

The snorkle went on not long after that. Even if the unthinkable had happened we would still of been more lucky than the owner of a V8 jeep that went on a trip a year or so ago. Water was less than 18 inches deep but had a steep access. Jeep wisly put the intake in the grill. Insurance paid $15000 to fix the motor. It broke 2 con rods but had to be kept idleing wkile being towed out as the power assist is very high for brakes and steering to the poiunt they didnt work without the engine. Ive driven my wagon around for 2 weeks without power steer while fixing the pump Its unpleasant but not impossible
