Good afternoon boys & girls, I think my engine is dead, its been drinking oil, faster then it uses petrol, and it has started to spit oil out the exhaust. its a 1990 MU 2.6, man petrol, does anyone know what the probelm is, im no expert but i guess its the piston rings, not sure. also how much it is going to set me back to fix. and what sort of engine swaps have people done on these vehicles, might start looking to repower her. ;D

Grab yourself a compression tester. WIll tell you wether it's rings, valve seals or otherwise. Does sound like rings though.

Sounds fatal. It is most likly rings but could be valve guide seals or cracked head/block or scored bores A compression test will probably be ok if its just the oil rings but will be low if the compression rings or any of the other faults. You wont realy know till you take the head off. What milage??

Without experience I wouldn't dare crack open a diesel - unless you've got some experienced help.
My 2 cents.

Where are you? From previous posts I gather you bought this very recently. Did you buy very cheap? Did you buy from a dealer? You might have a valid claim if the second is true. If your in NZ you could get a new engine from www.isuzu4x4.com but this could cost up to 2000.Finding anouther trooper or Mu with the same engine on trademe would be cheaper If its just rings the parts would be 600 - 700 for rings gaskets bearings etc but its not a job for novices although its not that hard. Rebuild will be cheaper than repower as in NZ you start with a certification fee of 400 as soon as you put a different type of engine in. Comadoor v6 engines make these go very well.

I got it about a month ago for 3,000, i know they person who owned it b4 hand and they took really good care of it, so i wasnt to worried about the history, its come at a really bad time, might just have to get a maunal (Book), and fix the engine myself, be a good place to start, and if i bugger it up, ill go get a V6 ;D do the v6s, bolt up to the manual trans on the mu, or do you need the trans as well, is there a build up some where i can read up about that?? Im in auckland.

The common way to do the v6 is to use the holden auto and mate this to a hilux transfer case. The hilux transfer case is separate where out isuzu ones are attached to the gearbox. The output shafts come out in almost the right place so its just sway over the splines. Then its just make new engine mounts fiddle with the new computer(this is easier on the old v6 as the eccotech engine talks to the ignition key for anti theft) get it certified and your back on the road. Tech books would be a good place to get the manual. Either the trooper or frontera manuals should cover your engine. I will send a couple of manuals that should help to your listed email but they are missing some of the measurements you need. If your lucky the oil rings will be just gummed up or lost tension so new rings and bearings will fix. If when you take the head off you find a lip on the top of the bore you can catch a finger nail on then its a second hand engine or full recon.

Hunt down Marks adapters on the net. It might be possible If so they would know. Dont expect an engine conversion to be the cheap option.

, Yup thats for sure, prob cost me 4 times as much to put a new engine in there rather than fix the old lump. I was planing to do it later on down the track to chuck a new engine in there, after i had killed the old engine, but it happened a lot sooner than i had thought, i was planing to use the MU for mostly off road adventures, with the odd on road time. To add insult to injury the oil feed lines to my turbo on the surf have started to leak oil too. must have done something bad resently ill be on the old bus soon thanks again for the manuals Geeves, ill go get a compression test soon, and see what the old mechanic thinks it could be, and if it is the worst case, i guess ill be ripping into the engine.... wish me luck, im sure i will be on here asking a lot of questions.... Thank You !!
