I run Castrol RX Super 15w40 in my 4jg2. It's commercial grade with in CF-4 rating. You can go 1 step further to Super Plus which is approved by brands like Mack, Merc, MAN, Cummins etc. No probs with it. I used to run Rimula X 15w-40 in my 163,000km 4jb1. Never used a drop between 10,000km oil and filter changes, although the oil pressure did drop off towards the end. Always stayed on the top dot on the dip stick. The bottom dot means add oil which equates to 1 litre so I guess anywhere in between is ok. I always check the oil in the morning so I know the true level. Don't bother to check at the service stations then top it as half of it is still up in the engine. Anyway, if its blowing a bit of smoke, at least you know it's well lubricated ;D. In the old old engines the books used to say if it wasn't using any oil, something was wrong Good luck.

I use Mobil Delvac MX400
Dunno what it is like etc but seems to do the job - overfilled by about 200mls when did oil change and thought nothing of it for a week - then noticed a lack of power every now and then - drained the excess oil last week - noticed huge increase in pwoer again!! lol Just thought i might not have read stick right so didn't worry about it. Was told by mate that overfilling is way worse than underfilling so took excess out! I have always just overfilled my cars/vans/etc with oil cos usually they use oil!! but the Mu isn't using any oil yet - luckily and it shouldn't either with inly 121kms on clock (lol a few more than the 117600 when i bought it 6 weeks ago!!)

Amazing the differance one small beer glass of oil can make. It can cause seals to leak etc and several people have noted blue smoke till the leval drops to the correct leval. I would of thought much more oil would be needed to effect power as this suggests the crank is actualy splashing in the oil

Might be good idea if someone clarifies grading for oils (as mentioned above) so we can read the can and know exactly what we're buying. Most containers note somewhere in script API CF-4 or API CG-4 etc with the letter after the C indicating quality of base oil before additives are put in? Higher letter - higher the grade. CF = ok standard, CG = better etc. I note the Caltex Delo400 people recommend is CI grade, the highest I've seen. Is anyone up with this and able to explain further for the masses. Mike.

Excellent website - if you click on the engine oil bible bit at the top there's full explanation on oil ratings, though at that time the rating only went to CH-4. Good stuff.

Overfilling the Isuzu diesels especially the turbocharged ones can be catastrophic to the engines!! Oil gets drawn into the intake and can cause the engine to hydraulic(i.e. bend conrods if too much is drawn in or if a little is drawn in at a time you can get compression ignition of the engine oil which as you may know can cause the demise of your engine! I overfilled mine slightly and it has pushed it out of my already slightly leaking headgasket which was my good fortune because when I did a U-turn the other day the engine started to ignite the oil that had slushed into the intake(and yes I do have an oil catch can in the system) so don't underestimate the importance of the warning not to overfill is the moral of the story! Good thing my engine needs a recon anyway!!
