This is more for 3.1 Turbo owners, Trying to work out a normal position for the temp guage. Does your guage sit at 1/4 1/2 or 3/4 under normal running. Now where does the temp sit when truck is under load eg. soft beach driving or pulling a trailer or long hills.
Every ones input will help all our temp concerns.
Thanks
Davo

I would say both of ours run 1/3 normal running and probably 1/2 towing the camper when going up steepish inclines. The only time I've seen one over that was when the Wizard was really over heating. And that was caused from poor servicing of the auto trans and maybe the fan hitting the rad (prior to my owner ship). Cheers Bruce

my factory temp guage sits a bit under ½ way, directly in line with the 5500rpm indicator on the tacho. Have only ever seen it go up once and that was heading up Henry Roberts Drive chasing Tom. Went to ¾ and I backed off. Doesnt go up in soft sand or towing boat or horsefloat. Loses power before temp goes up. Not sure if that is a good thing...

OK, I have been working through a temp reading problem on My 89 4JB1T and am keen for advise on what every one else's reads as normal. As a background I have had a temp gauge that used to move so little while under normal running that it was hard initially to pick up if it was moving at all. On Saturday I replaced the sender with an Intermotor one (that was listed for my model) and went for a drive to test. On Sunday I set out for a trip with a group of 4WDers and took this photo to show what the gauge was reading after 20 Minutes on the open road getting to the river bed we were traveling! I had my better half who was the copilot and some driving for the day, take the photo as it's not recommended to try doing this while going 100Kph. Sorry about the focus!! but you get the idea. While on the trip we did a fair bit of river fording and had the fan eat into the radiator It now looks like this. During the trip but before I found the cause of the temperature rise we took this photo of a higher reading. My question is if the first reading looks a little low? and considering the fact that when I was looking for the cause of the high temperature I put 2 1/2 liters of water in it to refill it, is the higher reading picture maybe a bit low as well? For your amusement here is a pic of what I use my Isuzu for, Sorry to Elmo the Nissan SAF owner but it has to be shown!!

Both of mine run the same as your first pic.If the needle gets to 1/2 I start to worry. The ding in the radiator is one of the reasons I'm going to an electric fan on the other side, not an option if the aircon still works. Harry.

Cheers for letting me know the first pic was about normal, I am in the middle of hopefully fitting an electric fan set up as well.
I had the heater cranked up, and the windows down to dissipate a bit of heat, so I'm picking I was very lucky not to do damage on the 1/2 hour drive home from the river with the high temp.
As I plan to do a lot more of the river work I think it's best to get this sorted now.

No need to apolagise to Elmo it was his decision to buy a beached whale. Top pic is normal second one a little bit of a worry. Hope you havent done other damage. Mine has never reached half way even going up the Treble Cone skifield road on a 35 degree day or driving 20km with a heater hose I could put my hand through. (water came out as fast as it could be put in)

I saw y'all on Sunday, I should have joined in.... but had other comitiments.
The low guage readings used to be normal for me, but I suspected a bad thermostat as the heater took a good 10 minutes to warm up. I had replaced and checkd it in boiling water many times unitl I bought a genuine one. Now to goes to 2/3 to 1/2 scale much more promptly and stays there. The high reading however I would think is overheating, obviously it should'nt happen so time for a flush?
