There is 2 different noises a turbo can make. The first can happen to any turbo but more so the earlier non cooled turbos. This was a whine that changed with turbo speed and temp and could be quite loud. It is caused by the impeller passing surface cracks in the housing. It is generally not fatal but can be very annoying. It can be caused by not running the engine to cool the turbo but some turbos do it anyway. The other noise is typical of the turbo in the 3.1 engine. This is the characteristic wind down noise that sounds like you starting with half a lungfull of air then whistleing a single continuous note till you run out of air. If you have this the end is nigh.

When I first got my 3.1 MU, it made no wind down noise after shutdown. Not long after it started making the noise and continues to make that noise and still whistling on full boost at least 4 years and 100000km later. I even had it checked out a few years back by a turbo specialist and he felt movement in the impeller. When the day comes, it comes! Im in the same boat here with this one, mine did it from when i got it and seems to be the same yet it still pushed plenty of boost? I do get a little bit of smoke but not much. since i have bought my mu (6mths or so ago) i have done over 30,000kms and many hours of idle + city driving. It would be good if it hold out! Thanks for the wealth of knowledge that has just been posted guys!
