i found a puddle (big one) and had to have a go at crossing it . well it turns out this puddle never dries out so was heaps of deep mud underneath. i know i broke all the rules, did not check depth - went too fast - etc, was lucky that a front end loader just happened to be passing to give me a tow. ended up with front right wheel very deep exhaust was out of water (rear left) but left the engine running so what i need to know is what should i check for damage, have a Grey sludge coming from fan so assume that that has had it would like to know where the standard breathers are on a 93 3.1 td so i can see if they went under. now that that is out of my system will only 4wd responsibly from now on cheers in advance Hagar

Check all the oils by takeing a sample from the drain plug. If its milky of if a drop on a hot stove element fizzes change the oil. The breathers are up next to the 4wd lever. Hilux fan fits if yours is no good We all make at least one mistake. Its only a problem if someone has a camera

Washing out the radiator is also a good one. Some time from now on a hot day on a long trip it may show up with the engine overheating... it has with me.... There is not much water half way up Porters Pass.
Wash out with a low pressure hose, never high pressure as you may damage the core and cause it to leak. Also always wash the muck out, not further in. That is from the engine bay out (forward). Otherwise you can just wedge in harder any grit

had a talk to a mechanic today and he said that although my fan still "works" i should replace it.
it works in the respect that it goes the whole time and when i try to turn it when cold the pulley behind it turns also.
the question 1) do i need to do anything? 2) can i just repack the gunk in the fan? 3) do i have to replace the whole lot inc pump and if so what damage can my wallet expect.
its a 3.1td ant temp seems the same . I'm not sure if the water did anything or if it was always stuffed. only had it 5 months
cheers again guys.

If somthing is coming out of the fan yes it is broken but if you cant turn the fan without turning the pulley then either the belt is loose or the fan has siezed. Siezed fan is not a problem except it will use slightly more fuel and its more likly to hit the radiator if (when)you submerge it again

Where is that? Theres not a large number of places near Wanganui that your allowed to play in the dunes. Ive done the run from Castlecliff to about 10k north of Kaiiwi last June but had to turn back to Kaiiwi as the tide was too high to get round some rocks. A mmember of Wanganui club tryed to show off crossing the Kaiiwi stream in the wrong place. As he was climbing out the window the water was flowing back in. His Terrano didnt go very well after that
