Hi all,
About to do my first oil change in the MU, reached the 5000kms since i got it. Being my first diesel was a bit confused with the oil, while i understand the 15w/40 and all that was just wondering the difference between low ash/medium ash/high ash etc is it just that the better oils are low ash?
Bought a nippon max oil filter as well to do the change
Cheers.
Rob

Most Japas are meant to use high ash but most of the oil thats gone in mine has been low ash with no bad effects. Bought it at 92000km now pushing 200000km. Don't really know what the ash content means. Get an oil with a sae rateing of CH4 or better and you cant really go wrong. Changing the filter for the first time will be entertaining to watch but don't let the kids watch or they might learn some words you rather they didn't know. Best way is to remove the front wheel then the rubber pannel on the inner guard and do it through here. Its a bit of a fiddle to get a filter tool on and harder to get the filter in and out of the gap. Once youve done it a few times it will take less than 5 minutes but for a first time the record is 30

sounds like fun, ill let you know how long it takes me.
previous owner advised to just use the filter tool but i could not find one when at supercheap so ill try the wheel thing
Bought some valvoline super diesel oil with the low ash.. not sure if its CH4 or not but will check when i get home

The Mus are easier as you can reach the filter from the top to unscrew it and lift it straight out but you will be lucky if you can start the thread on the new one that way. If you ever fit an inter cooler you will run into all the extra enjoyment us bighorn owners have

oils can be climatically dependant too. it depends on where on the globe you are. if your mu is standard suspension etc, you should be able to do the oil filter from underneath with the tool as you mentioned. I bought mine at Supercheap for $19.95. I have never spent more than 5 minutes removing the old and fitting the new. I used to spend longer cleaning up the mess until Justin shared to idea of the cut in half juice bottle. mine is 3.1, not sure if the filter is in the same place on a 2.8.
