are there any warning signs of fuel pump seals failing. i.e, noises.

My understanding is that fuel pump seal failure causes either no power or diesel leaks. Ir theres noises it could be air in the system so could be worth bleeding the system but otherwise dont sound good

When the seals went in the pump in our C223 it had to be bled to start it.The weight of the cam belt kept pressure on the inside of the bushes the main shaft ran in causing enough sideways movement to pull the seals open & let air in.An overhaul with new parts blew the savings account but had it running well again. PS the vehicle had done about 250,000kms by clock then.
