How fast or to what speed, does everyone take their MU to on the black top ? I was riding home up the M1 yesterday at my "2 hours unpaid overtime and general bad day" default speed of 140kmh and got passed by a MU .... This black number didnt look like it had seen a bath since imported and the rear was covered in black soot although I saw no hints of anything when he backed off or put his foot down again. I was of course interested, (amazed and mystified also came to mind) so I rode up to see what it was all about. Didnt look anything out of the oridnary other than filthy dirty and seemingly unloved. He sat on 150kmh from Smith Street at Helensvale to the brewery at Yatala (about 30k's for non locals). Crept up a little in places but came back to 150 generally. I just wondered what everyone else does. I have crept up to 130 or 140 but only in passing a car. Generally 120 is about as much as I feel the 3.1 is happy with. I have never redlined her in ANY situation and have only pulled a tad over 3500rpm off road once in a moment of panic (water ½ way up the rear windows going backwards into a creek). Are these a high revving motor as far as diesels go and what is the point where you start damaging things or drastically reducing the lifespan of the donk ?

In standard form my MU (2.8) used to do 150 down a slight hill but that is the max as it's on redline (4250) and the govener wont let it rev any harder.

Ive had 160 from the 2.8 bighorn but this was downhill tail wind etc. 140 to 150 is flat out on the flat and not at all comfortable or safe. It wasnt a v6 petrol or later shape with the 3.0 in it was it They go like a cut cat

All jap engines like revs although this does have a slightly different meaning in a diesel. Generaly red line is the max an engine should ever be made to do and even then it shouldnt be doing it all day. Ive run mine at 3500+ for 5-10 min at a time at felt the rev limiter several times off and on road Peak horsepower is at 3800 and there are times you need all youve got . The limiting factors in a diesel is more the speed that diesel can burn (rev them past this point and your diesel just goes out the pipe as smoke) more than the physical strenght of the engine

I just did a short trip yesterday, Brisbane to Broken heads/Bryon Bay and back (500kms) and the most I was comfortable with was 120 at 3000rpm. For a roughly standard MU, (apart from the funky reflective blue tinting in the rear), I figured that 120 is enough, their not built for speed. Started to get the speed wobbles, (although I recently had wheel alignment and balance done-might have to done them done again), just wondering if others get this around 120kms.

My bighorn 2.8td did about 140-145kph standard. Since engine development to 155 horsepower, will do 150kph+ on 30.5" tyres. Would pop 160kph+ with 33" tyres to lift the gearing a bit - but I would not like to have to turn or stop suddenly - they are not set up for that set of speed esp with mudgrips. Dyno showed max torque for mine at 2300rpm and max hp at 3320rpm.
Saw roadtest recently on all new model 4x4 utes with new 2.8 and 3.0 turbos. Acceleration times 80 - 110kph were in range 7.1 to about 9 seconds over the models. Mine runs 80 - 110 in just under the 7 second mark now. Go Isuzu!!! The 80 - 110 zone is a very good grunt/torque indicator for the type of power we need on and esp off road. Lot safer, and cheaper too if you happen to get busted - as I did recently. Mike. Ouch.

Nah, LOL. From that link, the old Suzuki might have had to work a little harder catching up to that one. members.oztralia.com/~federalaffair/splatter roof.gif[/img] Not sure about the donk but it was the older 2.8 shape with ¼ glasses and manual mirrors, well one of, the passengers side just had a stick where a mirror used to live once . Had a standard tailpipe with the factory diesel soot around the end. Thanks Alan, I didnt know that. That is good info. Nope, take her to the doctor, that cant be good

Both my 1989 Trooper 2.8TD and 1997 3.1TDi both top out at 139kph on straight and level road. To drive at that speed on anything else beside straight and level road is crazy.

I've only ever had about 145 kph out of my 2.8. Even at that speed things were sounding quite busy up front. I definitely wouldn't want to sit there for extended periods. Doesn't do too much for fuel economy either.

Lets just say that i would not want to doing over 140km on a very windy day. One good strong sudden cross wind, and you might be looking for a wheelchair,...lets hope no one does. I remember one the time recently doing 140km and a sudden cross wind hit me side on and pushed the MU right across the lane and into the other lane, that made me slow down to 120. Its that first big gusts that gets you then you go, "Hmm its a bit windy today, maybe I'll slow down?"
My thoughts only
SAFE DRIVING Cheers

I agree with your thoughts entirely. Yeah, I copped a beauty on the M1 this morning near Dreamworld where there is a bit of unshielded road. Was doing about 125 and got hit from the side with a good gust. Put the willys fair up me and I ended up in the next lane before I knew it. I should have known by the way the trucks were being blown around but didnt think I would be affected like I was. Did the rest of the M1 leg to Smith St at 110.

Pah! You don't know what fear is until you've drive a MCC Smart in gale force weather, it's very disconcerting when the wind flexes the door so much the window is 2 inches away from the frame at the top of the door ;-)
Also had lots of fun when riding motorcycles with strong (but constant) side winds ... just lean in to the winf at 45degrees and hope it's doesn't stop blowing :-)
