I did both sides today - ooops me and snapping off studs!!! Ah well now intake and exhaust are covered and little tiny leak from exhaust section as i broke that nut off!!! BUT wow the performance is very noticeably different!!! I am going to flush radiator and reverse flush whole system afterwards and replace using 50:50 ratio - man it is awesome off-road - gotta love 4wd's!!!!!
Went up (what I thought) was some pretty steep gravel banks and river banks yesterday and woooohoooo did she holla at me - rrrrrraaaarrrrr!!!!!
I will get mate to take some pics tomorrow if we both go!!!

I mite do this too mod too.. looks like my valves are or have been leaking anyway as there is carbon spray around the spring vents on the valves. should be a decent improvemnt if they are buggered

Been doing heaps more off-road stuff now
Only difference i have noticed on road (highwya) driving is that instead of sitting on 2800rpm at 100kmh i sit at about 3200rpm nowadays cos of egr pipe thing!
Next stop is to save up and get the $189 K&N filter for it and after that the homemade Snorkel materials (getting $82 worth of stainless tube so i have some spar ein caase of f-ups!!) and some inventive welding mates!!

Your RPM at 100kmh can not change with any engine modification.

What mechanics studies have you done? not the night course at local college i hope!!! lololol

ROFLOL what computer ? unless you have a common rail 4Jb1t i think you should go and talk to a mechanic and get some tips on how a motor gearbox and diff works

I think the taco is telling lies then. I dont know for sure where the feed for the taco is but on a lot of diesels its on the alternator. You havnt bumped this while playing with the egr pipe have you. A good test for this although it is a little hard on the engine (I take no responsibility for loud banging noises followed by sillence) is to run the engine right up to the rev limiter which will be very noticable at about 4200rpm Its isnt good to run an engine like this but it hasnt killed mine yet

Maletimaru - if your mu is a 2.8 the price you quote for your K&N filter could be too high. Just picked up one for one for a cobber's 2.8 bighorn and it was $105 club price. Give me the year and engine size for your mu and I'll check for you at repco and see what their price is trade - Mike. (Christchurch) p.s. have done a few mods to my motor and no difference to drive ratios/revs.

Cheers geeves yeah my tacho was 4500 rpm redlining!! is now back to 4200rpm so maybe bumped whilst rock hopping down Pareora river to the huts!!! lol
Mudgrip my mu is a 1991 4JB1T (2.8dt Manual) and that quote IS a REPCO quote lol - maybe you can get me one cheaper - great if you can!! I am about to BUILD my own snorkel as i nearly got stuck in bonnet high river crossing yesterday!!! Not bad but considering i do not have a snorkel and am running 57000kms old 31x10R15 Dunlop Adventurers with only 4mm on rear and 5mm on front i did quite well i reckon - VERY well to get out after all warning lights on dash lit up like a frikkkkking xmas tree!!! lol ADRENALIN eh!!
Thanks guys keep helping me out and stopping me from getting sill yideas!! lol

Also mudgrip my air filter is the 150mm one NOT the 126/128mm one - so that is why it is so much more expensive otherwise it is only $130 odd !!

Re the kn filter. A few of the boys up this way have managed to install standard pod type filters inside there airbox by clamping it directly to the flange at the top. I looked into this idea myself but the bighorn box has a tower in the middle that makes the hight too small. You have to take your chances on the cheap pods though Some people swear by them others say they are rubbish. I have heard of one that lost the center crome bit on a turboed Nissan Safari. Owner though the very loud bang as this cap sealed off his air intake followed by total silence was his engine totaling itself. I ended up useing a foam Unifilter which works well and quite a bit cheaper than KN. I had to do somthing as moisture comming down the snorkle was killing paper filters far to quickly but not as bad as the soggy filters I used to get before the snorkle. (highest tide mark inside airbox 1cm from top next half pint of water would of cost 3000)

After reading the stuff here I blocked off my EGR today, at the inlet side so far - will do the exhaust side tomorrow. Went for a 250km drive (Melbourne - Ballarat return) after I blocked them and noticed two things :
1. It seemed to rev more freely, not a significant change so could be imagining it but felt like it was revving more smoothly now.
2. Noticed smoke on startup when I've not had it before. Small cloud of white smoke in the garage when I first started it up, and noticed another small cloud when I started it up in Ballarat after some lunch.
Little concerned about the smoke, could be that I haven't really been looking for smoke before but odd that I started to see it today. Otherwise the change made minimal or no difference.
Cheers, Clark
