I gave him a call today to get answers for the questions he missed. In relation to Mandrel construction been done by Bending Machine or Welded together. His opinion is that it makes absolutely no difference unless the person welding is not a good welder. I also asked him about Mufflers, he recommends using a non perforated(spelling?) one and with no chambers, will help keep the noise down and no decrease in performance. He also says that there would be a big performance difference between a 2.5" press bend and a 3" mandrel system. This is the link to his thread on outer-limits: www.outerlimits4x4.com/PHP_Modules/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=69303The reason why I have bothered to even follow this thru is because these questions have been debated over and over again....and....every time you speak to a mechanic, exhaust mod etc .... you get different answers. This guy has stuck his business on the line by offering free advise in perhaps Australia's most used forum for 4x4 enthusiasts and most been 4x4 people looking for maximum performance, this ain't a explore-OZ type forum. I am yet to see one person debate his recommendations....so that must say something. Francesco

My two from RBs is a lot tiddier than that, what sort of system is it suppose to be? Looks like it is 3 going into 2 3/4 than back to 3 inch. Cheers Bruce.

I'm gonna throw another spanner in the works here regarding my 3.1. I've got a sports muffler and 2.5" squeeze bend tailpipe. Now, if I get a 3" exhaust from the turbo back to the muffler which is just before the diff, does the system, and/or muffler, act as an expansion chamber to some degree- ala 2 stroke motorbike or ski.
To put forth another question. I've got uprated torsion bars. If I go 2.5 or 3 inch exhaust from the turbo, how the hell does the oil filter come in or out?
Cheers
ps. I've just read the next topic in this exhaust section and it pretty much answered my first question, restricting the tail pipe from large diameter exhaust should be beneficial.

I have the Oil filter issue Roger - bigger TB's & 2.5" exhaust.
Some people are able to get the filter out moving upwards, slips out over the chassis rail in the wheelarch.
Mine doesn't work this way. I have to drop the front driveshaft to get the filter past. Adds about 5 mins to the job.

Not the shocks mate. Other ones made no difference. Just no room between the chassis rail and the body.

I have the same problem i make sure that the passengers side is higher than the drivers. This can be done by jacking that side up only need about 25mm or park on uneven ground. Works for me every time.

Hey there. I have seen from other posts that the exhaust temp is important on these engines, but I need to put some heat wrap about the dump pipe down to the flexi, to protect my clutch cable (ubs52) as the cable runs down the same side as the exhaust on the later model motor. Is this going to effect it very much? any problems in doiing this?

What about putting a heat shield made od 1mm aluminium and bent to fit between the cable and pipe. If you have more than 2 inches clearance though there shouldnt be a problem

Just called up a few places to get some quotes.
on a 3" mandel bent exhaust including fabricated Dump Pipe, Flex pipe and Cat. most of them said that there was only about $40-50 difference for 2.5"
Men @ Work - $700 Rob Bliss - $780 Exotic Exhausts - $1100 Cleveland Exhausts - $950
Francesco what was that place called at wynnum?

I got mine done at Bayside Muffler, ask for Cookie (thats his name)
number: 33963335 Address: Cnr Bay Tce & Berrima St, Wynnum,QLD, 4178
He did mine for $650 including GST. 3" Mandrel straight down right hand side....is great. He used straight thru porforated muffler, branded Berkley.
He heat shield wrapped my dump pipe, made new mounting points to run down Right hand side, painted the exhuast Black, and also put in provisions for a Pyro Gauge.
Had one little issue with small section, but nothing he wasnt happy to correct, and I dont think he will make that mistake again.
Very happy with it.
Let me know how you get on.
