Hey. I was reading one of the threads on G80 LSD's in MU's, and I just went out to the garage to see if I could find out if I have one. Truck is a '93 MU 4JB1T So I jacked up rear wheels... When I turn the rear left wheel forwards, rear right wheel goes backwards. When I turn the rear left wheel backwards, rear right wheels goes forwards. When I turn the rear right wheel either way, the left wheel does not move at all. Do I have an open diff? an LSD? a broken LSD? a broken open diff? Just tell me what I do have please ;D Andy (any help appreciated)

Try the same test with the car in gear (motor not running) You will see the same for left and right If you dont you wouldnt be able to drive it anywhere. What happened on the left was that the driveshaft spun instead of the wheel on the other side This could be for a variety of reasons none worth worrying about. Its not lsd, bad luck

He is right - you have an open diff.

Is it easy to swap my open diff for a LSD?
If yes, how much would it cost me?
I don't need anything like an ARB air locker (it's a daily driven road car and only gets off-road about once every two weeks).

Quite easy to swap open diff for lsd - did this on mine a couple of years ago and find definite advantage off road. Best place to buy one secondhand is probably "Bits for Isuzu" in Auckland - click on the 4x4 CARE column on the home page, then "Spare Parts" , then the Bits for Isuzu logo, and you'll have all their contact details. I asked for their best club price and got mine for $405. Same item in Chch was $670-770, so their prices are good.
Probably 3-4 hours to put in, and you must first check exact diff ratio for your truck. LSD probably fine for you but if you want to spend a bit more you can get - depending on your model - a rear lokka from 4wd Sysyems Online in Adelaide though they're probably $600+ now delivered(before fitting cost), with our dollar rapidly deflating.
Forgotten exactly what I did to measure diff ratio - marked both tyre and driveshaft and rotated tyre twice I think and counted turns on the driveshaft - someone here will give you this process accurately. Quite easy.

To change is easy (technicaly anyway I had a bruised chest for a week after doing mine) Hardest part will be finding an lsd for sale. An lsd will cost about half what it costs to buy a front auto locker but theres a little more work in fitting the locker as you fit it to your diff. To chage all you do is remove the brake calipers then undo the 4 bolts that hold the axle assembys in and withdraw the axles. Then lie under the diff facing the rear of the car and undo the 12 bolts that hold the diff in Then slide the diff out onto your chest It pays not to be too skinny at this point Dont drop the diff onto your chest It ways about 30kg and hurts enough when your chest is at the same hight. Wriggle forwards till you can gentaly roll the diff onto the garage floor. Clean as much oil as you can from the diff housing and use a good sealant on the diff matting face. Roll the new diff onto your chest and wriggle under the diff housing and slide into place. It will jam several times before going in correctly and your wife and kids will learn several new words. Then bolt everything back together in the opposite order fill with lsd oil Easy You need to watch the ratios which must match your front diff It will be 4.3 or 4.56 All bighorns from 88 onwards and Mus have the same diff in the rear. My chest is a tight fit under the diff which is why I got away with this method If you drop the diff onto your chest you will break things and they wont be the diff

An LSD is a bit further down the track and wishful thinking at the moment. (I'm only a high school student, so i don't have the $$$$)

When I swapped mine the hardest thing I found was taking off the big nut holding what I think is called the yoke on. Well worth the effort though. It made a bigger difference off road than adding the lokka did. Though I think they are both worthwhile Jimmy

So there is a brand called Dominator that makes a 17 spline front LSD and a 26 spline rear LSD?
Or is Dominator for the 17 spline front LSD, and Detroit 26 spline LSD for the rear?
As you might have guessed, I am just getting into to 4wding, and do not know much of the technical stuff.
What LSD type do the Isuzu (G80 option), Detroit & Dominators use? E.g. Syncro, Positraction, Hyrdraulic, Electric etc.

Hi Bruce - be interested to see what the Dominator locker (17 spline) is worth. Ask them for club/trade price. Is this specifically for the bighorn front end?
Thanks, Mike

Have just been told from the guy at Locked Drive that they only have diffs for the V6 Jackaroos and that the diffs in tem have the same splines but are a bigger diff. Does anyone know how much a re built/ second LSD for the rear is? Cheers Bruce. PS the reason for asking is thwe Wizard only has an open diff.

So is the only option for an LSD (rear, and for a MU) a second hand factory option? Or is there another website for me to go to?

Bruce have you considered putting a lokka in the front diff this may be a good alternative i have mates with them in a few different vehicles and all report good perfomance from them there a a few posts regarding these under any other mods i think cheers Les

Hi Les Iam thinking about putting one in the MU it has a LSD in the rear, But my Wizard has an open rear diff and putting a lokka in the front might put to much strain on the front axles. Cheers Bruce
