Ok I suppose it is time to start showing you guys what I'm up to with my MU.
Its been off the road now for 2.5 years, and plans have changed over and over. But now I think I have one that will work, I hope anyway.
The plan - 1 MU body, 1 shorty Patrol chassis, transfer and diffs, and 1 Soarer V8 and auto.
Method - Mix in mixing bowl and cook for 2 years!!! (hopefully less than that cause I want to be driving it then)
Anyway it's going to be a slow build, and I'm going to make sure I have it all engineered this time. So progress will be slow but I'll try to keep pics updated.

I never realised the mu and patrol chassis were so similar. Do you have to cut the chassis at all or are all the wheels in the right place? Theres a lot of rusty patrols over here so there might be a few more of these hybrids on the horizon

Hi Alan, na the chassis aren't really close, the wheelbase is 2.5" longer, will be cutting off about 6" from the back and about the same at the front. All the mounts will need to be changed/moved, there will be a bit of cutting for the steering box to fit in... and probably more..

with that much to change why not use the mu chassis modifyied for the nissan suspension. Sounds like a long project

I'm going to use the patrol chassis with standard suspension to keep the COG down. The main problem I have with the Isuzu chassis is that it was designed with IFS, so when doing SAS it ends up to high due to the shape.

I disagree as you can mount the perches at any desired height & the length of the coils also contribute to the desired height. I just went for max clearances all round to help with the flex, but could of easily dropped it to say a 6" lift if i wanted. In saying that later down the track (this year) i will be once again modifying the front suspension & converting it to coil overs (race-runners). But good to see another mu taking the plunge into metamorphosis even if it is the second time around ;D good luck with it & pm me if there's any info you need as i will help in anyway posable?. BTW what made you change from the hilux set up? cheers muvit

Yes but no so easy with leaf springs. Either way I'm doing it my way even if it's just to be different.
I think it will be better with the patrol chassis anyway because I'm really trying to make it more of a 4x4 for long distance traveling in but is still able to do the hard stuff when needed, instead of the way it was going before which was all extreme.

Thanks Muvit. Nah the 2 years is when I get my licence back.. hopefully will be regoed and ready to drive then.
I just measured the rear wheel arch to the ground, and it at 950mm so it almost back to standard height with the 31" tire, should have a low COG with the heavy chassis and diffs.

Not really, didn't get much done on the weekend. Made some mounts for the rear... they need more bits added to them but it's a start. that's about it
