i thought you guys might find this interesting i did, im going to put a fan under my intercooler but haven yet because i wanted to add a digital thermometer and see what the temp is like post fan. i brought a cheap digital thermometer of trademe small simple nice big display, opened it up unsolded the 1.2M probe/cable and added an extra meter to the cable, then painted the outside black.
i was going to make a fitting and remove my egr valves and stick it in there but ive just stuck it in the top of the intercoolers fins close to the outlet.
tempreture readings:
sitting temp: depending on weather, 10-20.C 50 Kmph 24-26.C 70 Kmph 26-28.C 100 Kmph 36-41.C stopped with engine off, hot 40-41.C
if at any speed i really put my boot down you can see the temp rise by about +5.C then level off.
and without a fan it doesnt take long for it to heat up, say if your waiting at traffic lights or in traffic.
i just found it interesting that its hotter at 100 Kmph than 50 i thought it would be the other way round, with all this talk about wiring up a fan for when your 4 wheel driving at low speeds rather then having it running all the time. im gonna go with it running all the time while the engines on BUT have a switch on the dash (cold engine start up switch) the fan ive got is smaller than everyone elses its a pajaro intercooler fan with housing should fit quite nice.

My explanation would be that the fins dissipate the heat so with higher airflow there will be more heat transfer so the fins get hotter. I believe if the probe was internal the temperatures would reduce as your speed increases.
Although at higher speeds (and foot down) there will be more boost so the air is compressed more and heats up more.
I guess you could test this by coasting down a large hill in neutral with the engine running and see if the temperature reduces as your speed increases.

I did a similar thing on mine but taped the probe to the inlet manifold and got 25 at 100kph. It also didnt budge with hills etc. It made more difference where it was on the manifold with a reading of 45 - 50 close to the head

when you fitted your intercooler did you cut the hole in the bonnet under the scoop to match the intercooler ie no air missing the intercooler?

my hole for my cooler is directy above the cooler and the same size no air can escape, bonnet seals to the chrome surround, i will see about tapping the probe into the air intake. and see what readings i get.
