Yeah, I did think of the spacer idea, but I have the crossmember already since I thought I was going to need it to fit the springs in... so I will probably go that way since it also clears a bunch of space under the chassis in that area. I'm also going to have to pull leafs from the front pack - its sitting waaaay too high - kinda freaked me out when I first stood back and looked at it Well, I hope you get some funds clear to finish yours soon - its a very impressive looking truck with fantastic articulation. One more thing I've noticed - in doing the steering setup, which is in essence the same as yours, I've found the left-right lock is hopeless. I can't get enough travel to hit the standard steering stops on the Hilux axle at all and it looks like its because the pitman arm on the MU is far shorter than the flipped hilux arm on the axle.
Did you notice that or is it fine on yours? I'm going to machine up an arm thats a bit shorter to replace the Hilux flipped one.
Cheers
Steve

Yes it's the same as mine. How is you bump steer as well?? Mine is pretty nasty. This is why I am going to put an 80'series landcruiser box on it so the arm is the right length and facing forward so no more bump steer...

Ok I'm hopefully going to get back into this project, especially now that this will be my only vehical for a while. So far I have sitting here a 1UZ 4 litre V8 quad cam 32 valve engine, 4 speed auto behind it, 1 adaptor from the auto to a hilux gear driven transfer. I have also bought a set of 325/85 r16 (38's) Michelin XML tyres, these are ex-army and at $400 are a steel, and there regroovable... Still need to get a steering box, might just get a 60 series crusier one as they are cheaper, also have to get high steer kit as the welded arm wont pass engineers, need a top shift transfer, and drive shafts, will make some wrap bars for all the power (191kw). engine coming out gearbox coming out, it's handy to have some big tools at work... Gearbox adapter made by Dryden Motorsports and Hilux extension housing 191kw's of grunt This is what the tyres are off the tyres

Very cool... to answer an old question, yes the bump steer is a bit of a pain, but not as bad as I thought it might be. I'll stick with the setup for now, and let the certifier decide if I need to change it... might just fit a double steering stabiliser for now and live with it all. I looked at the V8 swap, and will be very keen to see how it goes in your truck... I've found with 4.8 diffs my one pulls like a schoolboy even on 36's so I'm probably going to stay diesel for now... I'm happy with the overall finished (nearly) product. I love those tyres, just hope you have enough weight in the beast to mold them into the terrain.. or the terrain is just going to come off second best Which will be fun to watch... as long as its not from directly behind you Steve

Quick question re: my new project... Can you give me some details re: your adaptor from the Lexus to the Hilux T/C? I'm looking at a 1UZ with auto complete at the mo that would slot nicely into the Bighorn... not quite what I want, but will be the quickest up-and-running option... Where did you get it? was it off the shelf? What did it cost? ...and when will the beast be running again? I was nearly in Oz a few weeks ago, but I would like to put off coming over until I can come see this gettin' muddy Steve

Thanks for that Jan, I've grabbed his email from that posting... will think about it... not too sure I like the overall length of that assembly.... how long (or short ;D) will your tailshaft be? Might need a Hardy Spicer d-cardan at the rear as well to stop vibration once its in.
I'll probably look at machining something myself that eliminates the gearbox extension housing to try and make the driveline a little shorter, since I want dual t/c's on mine. This is assuming of course that I fit a Lexus to it... which for cost reasons just might be the engine I use, although I am drooling over a Holden 304 at the moment for a similar price, without the auto... although I have a Toy R151 gearbox which I can adapt cheaply to it.
Shame he never finished that 'Lux... looked like it had the potential to be quite a weapon.
Hows yours going by the way?
