Hi putting an intercooler on my 3.1 mu off a bighorn. I know I will need to bend a pipe. Was wondering if someone could give me instructions on what to do or post pictures of what they have done. When trying to match it up can't figure out how the i/c and turbo mmatch up with pipe as they seem too close together. Any help much appreciated

on the 3.1 the intercooler from the bighorn does not fit directly onto the Mu turbo. You also cannot adjust the turbo inlet to suit as this turbo has ceramic bearings that cant be moved. Easiest way is to use a bighorn turbo otherwise you have some complicated pipework to make.

I'll take some pics of Joes' MU (see Aussie member pics) and give you the lowdown on what to do and what you need. You might have to wait a while, so be patient. The pipework isn't terribly complicated, just a mandrel bend exhaust and some hoses- you'll see in the pics. You can decide then if it's too hard

My words earlier were "Does not fit directly" It can be done by custom making pipes. All the mounting brakets fit though so this could still be the easy way. If I was doing it Id probably use a Pajero intercooler They are smaller but have more fins so give the same capacity but would be more flexible in how they are mounted. Anouther way worth considering is the water to air type intercooler used on some Subarus Very compact up top The secondary part mounts in front of the radiator

I've obtained some Subaru bits to intercool our Wizard. Due to ridiculous international postage rates from NZ they're still sitting in Andrew's spare room: we hope to get down there next holidays, or have a friend pick them up. Can't wait to have a play with the bits, still need lots of pipework, possibly a cam cover off a BigHorn, and the front radiator for the water (for which an aircon condensor is adequate).
I want to retain a standard inlet pipe from the turbo to the injectors because I have to import the car into Australia as a Private Import , later on, and don't want it to be permanently modified. Perhaps I could obtain a standard pipe and cut it, or alternatively, the set off a late BigHorn.
I managed to get two Subaru waterpumps as well (one for a spare) , these are the way to go apparently as they are two-speed, circulate the water then crank up a gear if the water heats up (like when using lots of boost). Hopefully we'll make up the difference with the intercooled 4JX1 engine (11kW, 30Nm) or maybe improve it as top-mount air/air coolers aren't all that efficient.
These intercoolers are quite readily available in NZ through TradeMe, forget Ebay NZ for car bits, it's utterly useless. It's difficult to pay for goods in NZ though, for us Aussies; I sent cash which is luckily available, at times, locally at the bank (due to our proximity to NZ and heaps of Kiwi tourists).

HI Francesco, where did you get your intercooler and how much did it cost you? Iam able to do the fit as I can turn my turbo intake around to fit (cause I had to get a new turbo a couple of years ago and now have a now" bits of every thing turbo") an i/c. I believe mine does not pump as good as the original. PS could you e.mail me your phone no, cause I lost my phone (you might remember) and then the computer blow up, so I have lost all my no's, thanks mate. Give you a call when we are down your way in a few weeks. Cheers Bruce.

Now all you need is a air intake pipe like mine and you will be really hauling ass, The thread is called custom air intake pipe or something like that.
