ive read ALL the threads i could find here about intercoolers, and have decided that the easyiest and cheapest option for me is a top mount setup. my approach to these kinds of things is, that would be nice, no hurry, if you wait long enough you will get what you want for the price you want. i have just got everything i need from a bighorn (will pretty sure i have) all i need is to make a nice flowing curvey pipe from the intercooler to the turbo (3.1), i have decided on copper, as it is something we ourselves can work with, we normally use it for steam and thats about 80psi easy. and of corse cut a hole in the bonnet, but that doesnt scare me too much cause il now be looking for a 2nd hand bonnet for my MU in the right colour. but thats a job for after xmas, no hurry lol. i will be looking forward to having the only intercooled MU in my area, there are about 4 other "rare" blues ones, i want mine to stand out lol

looks like your almost there parts wise, 1 thing i would recomened is to clean out the inside of the cooler while you have it off, just use degreaser or petrol etc. the oil in the inside reduces its cooling eficency, although it is normal for a bit to run through it over the years.

yeah i read your intercooler thread and all the other ones, booked marked them all for future reference, was up quite late doing so lol, was very interesting, will be making my pipe work similiar to yours. how was your intercooler for clearance with the bonnet down? i hear the bighorn intercooler is a bit taller?

Hi Gecko,
I am also about to start an intercooler project but I have decided to go the watercooler route. I agree that yours is the least difficult installation but I am concerned that it's effectiveness is limited, especially on a very hot day when you need it most. We regularly have temperatures of 35-40 degrees C over here and air-air core of limited size cannot be the answer in this case.
I would appreciate it if you would post what power increase you achieve after the installation with a top mount air-air cooler.
Boet.

i dont get it with the water coolers, wouldnt the water just warm up in the engine bay and then it would only be keeping the air warm?
i have riged up a water sprayer other my air to air which helps cool it down when offroading at low speeds. you can also add a fan to keep air getting sucked though
if it was 35-40C then wouldnt the water be that temp anyway after sitting in the sun for a few hours?

The big advantage of water intercoolers is that the unit in the intake is much smaller and so is the plumbing. Because of this you have a lot more flexibility of design and location of the air to water part. The water coolers have 2 parts The intake to water cooler which fits in much the same way as a top mount air to air cooler and a water to air cooler that can be fitted anywhere you can get 2 16mm pipes to. Result no increased lag like you would get from a front mount air to air cooler (not realy an issue on diesels) and much smaller plumbing. Can you imagine a long skinny radiator mounted inside the front bumper with fan forceing.

Boet. the only was for me to tell would be what gear and how fast i get up hills, if i notice a difference i will post, but im sure people around my area with a MU will notice the difference lol and thats all good by me i was thinking the other day you could still get the topmount intercooler but not have to cut a hole in your bonnet, all you would need to so is weld 2 plates above and below the intercoller, so its completely sealed (water tight) then have 2 small pipes welded at each end top and bottom, then it would be like a water cooled intercooler, all you would then need is another small radiater behind your bumber and a water pump to circulate the water to and from the intercooler... the reason i didnt go water intercooler is $$$, i mainly use my MU as a service vechical and highway speeds are common (will still be putting a fan under the intercooler though) the amount of money to put one of thoughs water intercoolers in is abit too much for me and theres nothing to show off, i would be the only one who knew it was under the bonnet, so far for the top mount intercooler and all the fittings and fixtures in the picture above its cost me $120, and im happy with that lol if i go to sell my vechical would it make much difference what kind of intercooler i had put in it? most people wouldnt know the difference, theres none on TM at the moment, so if mine was to go on there with one i would expect it to get alot more interest just because its got one.

Hi Gecko,
You will not fly up hills just by fitting an intercooler. You will need to increase your diesel pump delivery to make use of the cooler air that the intercooler makes before you feel any difference in performance.
If it is more for the show and not the go you are installing the intercooler, you will not need to worry about resetting the diesel pump at all. It will also certainly increase the resale value of the vehicle.
The cooler air will lower exhaust gas temperatures and lower the stress on your engine so that will be an advantage you will have without any recalibration.
The cost and trouble of the watercooler would certainly be higher but I was planning to build one anyway as we have none available locally and an import is just off the scale. Also with the watercooled unit I can use the water from my 80 litre water tank to really make it effective. One could maybe even have a shower with the hot water after a long days driving!
Boet.

Boet. i was planning on getting it tuned by a diesel machanic next year too, i doubt if it has ever been done, no matter what happens its got to be better than standard, even if only alittle

I wouldnt run it through the 80l water tank esspecialy if you plan on drinking the same water. Warm water will breed all sorts of nasties. I would run a separate system with a 1 or 2 liter header tank. You can then also run some glycol just in case of a cold night Do you get Subarus over there. Some Legacy/Liberty GTs had water intercoolers ready to go. You may find them on other wrecked boy racer specials as well.

Hi Alan,
Thanks for the advice on the bugs in the water - I had not considered that. I can easily have a small header tank and rad - I was just thinking it would be easier using the 80L because I had it available. It also has the advantage that one can throw a packet of ice in it from time to time and then it will be really effective.
Not many Subaru's here I'm afraid so very scarce at the breakers yards and spares very pricey so I don't hold out much hope for that.
I would appreciate your input on my header tank idea but better not hijack Gecko's thread with my problems so I'll switch to the one I started.
Boet.

i think it looks pretty mean with the copper and chrome, will post some pics once ive got it drivable.

thought i better finally put up a picture of my MU with the bonnet scoop on. and the question do i notice a difference? h3ll yeah goes like a cut cat compared to before and i cant see smoke anymore, but im guessing once the intercooler fulls up with oil i will see a little bit of smoke again, unless i get a catch can. very happy with this mod, it also sounds cooler.
