Like alot of others I am keeping a close watch on my diesel pump seals as NZ fuel loses its sulphur. Alot of mates having to do seals now as their seals dry out (as with many on this website) without the lubricating effect of the sulphur. A few days ago a friend mentioned diesel treatment additives specifically designed to compensate for removal of sulphur from diesel. Said some are used and recommended by diesel and injector specialists.
With the cost so high to fix diesel/injector seals, I thought I'd better check this out - had previously heard this type of seal treatment was frowned upon. Spoke to an injector firm in Chch and he said yes they are good, they use them on their own trucks/vans and recommend them to clients. Good product. Bit of a surprise here. Spoke to a second diesel specialist today - a clubmate - and he also suggested its fine to use them. They have a lubricating effect on seals similar to sulphur but use a different compound to achieve this. They are a general diesel treatment cleaning out bugs, cleaning fuel system and lubing seals.
Some points they mentioned: don't use an abrasive type cleaner which can chew out injector nozzles. This is an ongoing treatment and can't be one of the more aggressive cleaning products. And while most products suggest about 50mls to a tank of juice, diesel men say dose every 2nd fill is ok - and refill tank at about one third full after initial treatment = about 50mls to 100litres for a 2.8 bighorn.
Checking products now and Proma recommended at about $44 retail for one litre - or twenty doses ( 50mls) as above. Wynns and Moreys also make this specific compound and club price is about $20 - 25 for one litre. Power-up has product at $99 for one litre. All suggest about the same dose.
Diesel men suggest Proma, while the others are probably pretty good. Don't know if its worth paying double for Power-up though they make good stuff.
So if we treat every second fill (with a bit left in the tank) we can get 20 doses @ about 100 litres per dose = 2000 litres from a bottle. My bighorn does about 11.5ks per litre so one bottle of product should last me about 23000 kms. 3.1s will be a bit less.
This could be a very good preventitive measure, very good economics if it works - hell of a lot better than up to $1000 for pump/injector seal job. It is ongoing.
This is what I've learned in the last day or two. Think I'd tend to go for the Proma as recommended by the diesel specialist. I'll definitely try a product - can't see any downsides with right compound and potentially huge saving. However, would be great to have some general comment and advice on this matter - any experience people have had with certain products etc. See what we can come up with. Note - a third injector didn't use any type of additive - wasn't familiar with them.
Thanks..Mike
