Just did my 5K oil change and had a think about how to avoid the oil pouring all over the front diff case when you pull the filter out. If you get a 2ltr milk carton and cut it in half top to bottom, using the half without the handle, cut out the base leaving a lip and it sits nicely below the filter hooking behind the fiter mount with the spout lining up between the drive shaft & T/Bar. You can leave it in place whil you remove & refit the filter and get away without spilling a drop over the diff case.

Wish I had thought of that, took a few rags to clean up the mess I made!
While we are on the topic of oil changes, I did an oil change 3 weeks ago and just checked it yesterday and saw that the oil is already very black and have only done around 1000 kms. Does this change in colour over a short period of time mean anything, or is it just the reason why we all change it every 5000kms.
Cheers

You can never completly drain the oil so some soot always remains unless you strip and hot tank the engine (done by reconditioners at great expense) This is life on a diesel and part of why the oil gets changed every 5000k. In sayin that the oil in mine is cleaner now at the end of 5000 than the new oil was when I bought it 80000k ago it will take several changes to rid yourself of the previous owners poor engine hygene standards Some people have put flushes through with good results some have had lumps dislodged by them that have blocked important little places I would say just change every 5000 use good oil and dont worry

Thanks J for sharing. I too use a few rags and with a 32 degree driveway, I was always having drips from the diff case or cross member where I didnt want them. Problem solvered thanks to a milk carton. Who'd have thought ... Top idea.
