Its been done to diesels before but you have to use the holden computer and its a lot easier to use the holden auto trans mated to a hilux transfer case. Parts to do this are available off the shelf at marks adapters. Remember also that this conversion will require certification Talk to a certifier before you start to save many migranes. If you get the ecoteck motor you have an extra headake in that the ignition key is id'd in the computer. Not impossible to work round but more than just a little annoyance. Otherwise the ecoteck is the motor to get if you can. Best way to get a motor is buy a complete wreck that doesnt have too much frontal damage

Just a warning I got from someone who had a Holden auto with Hilux T/C... they are aweful offroad. Really unresponsive and surgey... he said it was just plain horrible.
I'd be more inclined to run the R-series Hilux gearbox and transfer case behind the 3.8... (R-series boxes are found in most 5-door surfs in the early-mid 90's)

thats why I mentioned it was in a pajero. The surgy issue wont be transfer case caused. Its a pity because theres lots of broken pajeros out there with pto winches that would look nice on the front of our trucks if we could make them work

might be the by pass valve but I dont know if this is normal or repairable. Try changing your oil and filter and then filtering the oil through a handy towel and also opening the filter If anything bads happened in the engine there will be sparkely bits in the oil etc. Im wondering if it was a gauge fault
