Hi guys,
Has anyone here done any modifications to their air filter box to increase air flow?
I am about to get a Unifilter to throw in there, but there just seems to be a lot of plastic and stuff leading up to the filter chamber. Could this be to stop water from entering the chamber or is it just a factory restriction?
I was thinking about taking out all of the plastic boxes which is my air intake, and putting in a much simpler and more direct tube from the front grill to the air filter chamber.
I drive a 92 Mu 4JB1T.
Cheers
Daniel

Those little boxes that are around your air filter box are something to do with i don't know, but mine are gone anyways, just blanked off the holes and now have room for the air horns!!!!!
I welded a 2.5" tube bend into the air box where the old one was facing backwards to hook my snorkel tube onto, then fitted a ring to the inside of the top of the box and put a k&n pod filter in there, works well.
If you use your truck for 4wding then i wouldn't put the pipe to the front, the intake piece is on top of the guard for a reason, or else make up another section you can put on for 4wding to stop the crap getting in.
These are just my thoughts though and i'm sre someone else will have better ideas!!

Those plastic boxes are actualy mufflers belive it or not. From memory the Mu air intake isnt too bad although some people have remade just about everything. Mulover is right aboutnot running the air intake into the grille if you are ever tempted to go off road. 1 tablespoon of water in a combustion chamber = new motor. We had a v8 jeep out with us a while ago that has its intake in the grille from the factory. He followed a unsnorkled Mu and Vitara into a firepond and paid $15000 for his new engine. The only mod I would consider on the inlet to the airbox is a snorkle. If you remove the muffler boxes then make sure the wholes are permanantly sealed. On my bighorn the original intake from the airbox consisted of a 70 x 30mm pipe that ran in front of the radiator and finishing behind the battery. A snorkle made a huge differance. The unifilter made a small improvment but I was haveing issues with moisture comming down the snorkle killing paper filters in 6 months The unifilter has done 18 months so I better give it its first clean soon
