Hi. I have a 1996 3.1 Wizard that has an automatic gearbox which is a pain in the arse when it changes down unnecessarily. It doesn't seem to know the correct gear to be in at times. Does anyone have the same problem or know of a solution to this?

sounds like the kick down needs adjusting, call into your local trans shop and they should be able to sort it out for you

We have a 3.1 auto Wizard and it does the same thing, so I think when going up a steep hill where it does this Iam going to pu it in 3rd and plant the foot. I will have to this when we are towing our trailer anyway. We only have the prob when in over drive, and it goes to 100ks in 3rd no problems, try that and see what happens. Cheers Bruce

might be the kick down cable might be completly normal might be slipping torque converter. Cable is easy to adjust Slipping converter would result in burnt trans oil The trans oil should be bright red If dark red or brown this is bad. Best way to tell if its normal is test drive a similar model from a car yard If it does the same theres nothing wrong Otherwise a visit to a auto trans specialist is in order. Autos change gear when they think it is time to change which doesnt always fit with the drivers thoughts. The computer knows the speed, revs and throttle position and uses this to decide. Most of the time it does a better job than its given credit for.

I also have the same problem with my JDM MU w/ a 4JB1 engine. I've already adjusted the kickdown cable back and forth. There are times when it will shift correctly. Then after awhile (even when I park and shut off the engine, buy a few things at the grocery then start and drive again), the same problem comes back again. Besides the tranny not having to know which gear to shift is also when from a standing start, it will shift to the next higher gear at a pretty much delayed! In the end, I took off the kickdown cable and now it will shift to the next gear faster but the problem with the tranny not knowing which gear to stay on during harder than normal acceleration is still there! I've also changed my ATF to Dextron 3 but NO noticeable difference or improvement (though i didnt pulldown the oil pan and clean the strainer).
Can this problem (with the above symptoms) stem also from a defective computer box?

On the Wizards centre console there is two buttons,"Normal" & "Power", does anyone know if this power button works. In the manual it says to use it when going up an incline. I was just wandering what it actually does. Chees Bruce

My one does Bruce, it just holds the gear change for a little longer so you get higher revs in a lower gear. J

On some other brands of car this button is labled power/ecconomy. It only changes the shift points in the computer although at very light throttle the diffeence is almost nothing. Seeing your favorite trany specalist might help
