Hi engine in wifes bighorn dying, No4 cyl is about 1/2 compression of other cyls and pumping oil into intercooler.
I have been told that if rings are gone (likely, althrough engine not been overheated and at 167kms) that all 4 liners/pistons will need to be replaced?? (with cast iron liners)
Anybody have any experience rebuilding short block, or can just the damaged rings/piston be replaced??
And where can the liners etc be found ?? any good sources?
Thanks

He says Hawkes Bay so unless this mornings earthquake in Gisborn was a lot bigger than I thought its still NZ. Justin in Tauranga has just done his engine so should be able to give some pointers.
You wont know untill you take the head off what state the liners are in. If you are lucky rings will fix but you cant be sure. Dying at that milage suggests one of 2 things either the speedo has been doctored or the original japanese owner never changed the oil

A couple of good places to get parts is in clubisuzu.proboards29.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=Justabout&thread=1182126079&page=1The engine reconditioners that did the work for me cost about $2,600 (note these guys weren't the cheapest but are race car engine builders and came highly recommended) That included supplying and fitting liners, assembling the pistons, cutting valve seats, check valve heights and assemble head. They also supplied the new pistons and rings, conrod bearings, main bearings and cam bearings. Things to watch 1. You can get two types of head, a local (NZ/Au) that is more expensive but is ready to go; or an asian head (like I got) that requires some machining to set up valve heights etc, but is cheaper. I would suggest the more expensive option if the price difference is $200-300. 2. Isuzu genuine main bearings are about $500+ for a set, while the aftermarket set (from the same factory in Japan, but without Isuzu stamped on the box) is about $90 for a set. 3. From memory the reconditioners said they used Jaguar liners. 4. There are a couple of rebuilt 4JG2 engines on Trade Me at the moment for just under $4,000. This option needs to be considered as my rebuild, including a new head, with limited labour cost, was in excess of $4,000 5. Cast iron liners will need to be installed by an engine reconditioner as you have to overbore the block and cut new liner recesses. PM me or email me if you have any more questions
