i was just wondering if holden rodeo come with front intercoolers?? if so what year and would it be much of an effort to put one on a mu??? i want to intercool my mu but at the same time dont realy want to put a topmount on if i can avoid it. as for that maybe it would be cheaper to put a brand new front mount from say repco or the likes??
any thoughts
Matt

New is never going to be cheap. The only Rodeos with front mount intercoolers are about 2002 onwards so your unlikly to find one in the wreckers and they will want an arm and both legs for it Top mount using parts from an old near dead bighorn isnt that bad although cutting the hole in the bonnet scares some people. As yours is a 2.8 get a bighorn from 88 to 91 and you have all the bits and apart from rotating the intake housing on the turbo everything lines up even the bolt holes. You can use the same setup from the later bighorns but the earlier one has a larger scoop which looks better. If you dont want a top mount go to pick a part and get the bits off a 2 liter subaru or similar. Your on your own designing the plumbing though It shouldnt be too hard.

The problem I ran into with fitting the front mount intercooler was that to fit a cooler of a decent size it would either have to hand too low for my particular liking or I would have to cut and re-rout the air conditioning lines to fit it.
Others on this forum have done it. If you search through the threads there are some decent pictures of them also.

The opal frontera (the european mu equivalent) comes out factory front mount intercooled, but from what i can see the piping is pretty tight and its a lot of air for the turbo to blow, and it has a higher chance of getting full of crap.

The top mount is not such a bad way to go.... In winter (in Auckland) the average temperator of the inlet manifold is 37-42 deg and in summer it goes from 47-65 deg. I believe that the best air intake temp is 40-45 deg so I have mounted a 10" fan on top of intercooler and that keeps temp around 40-45 deg in summer. I have put a fish tank sensor on my manifold (intake) with a digital display in cab so I can keep an eye on things..... For what its worth top mount works well...

It depends on if you buy new or 2nd hand, custom or self installed.
Getting a nice shiny one installed from a very reputable workshop would probably cost about AU$2,000 here in Sydney. That's about the highest you'd have to pay but can do it much cheaper with a little effort.
Cheers! G.

intercoolers are about 500 to 700 to buy new in NZ You still need plumbing and instal costs which could easily reach double that. Second hand is far cheaper

Great job Conrad. Just have one question, what happen with the oil filling cap on the head valve cover? looks like the air inlet pipe must be removed to get the oil filling cap. I was thinking about using a 2.8, 3.1 NKR inlet manifold instead the one we have in our engines to connect the line from the intercooler to the inlet manifold. Maybe you can build one with the kit. cheers

yes dani4jb1t you're right that the intake pipe has to be removed when oil needs to be poured in but i took this route because its the coolest path to take unlike the in and out on the same side type where the cold air is headed up again from the exhaust of the turbo, and there is always room for a bigger intercooler if need be.i had to make some compromises in doing this kit for ease for the installer, thanks for the tips,i know you want one... just PM okay.thanks
