a mates mu crapped out last night.. first it started to make a tapping noise, off and on,then it was a constant tick tick tick tick tick, then he put the clutch in and it died, let the clutch out and it fired again, but when he stopped at the lights it died and wouldnt start...
he would like some advice..i said it sounds like the timing belt..
what do you think?
can it be fixed by just putting a new belt on it and setting the timing?

Unlikely. Some of the pushrods will be bent and one or more of the rockers may be broken. To check, take the rocker cover off and have a look.Broken rockers will be obvious and bent pushrods will show up through large tappet clearances.Don't know what else would cause the symptoms. Regards,Harry.

Doesnt sound like timing belt broken but it might of skiped a tooth. Could also be a broken ring or blown head gasket. These things can somtimes sound the same. Turn the motor over by hand while looking in through the oil filler If the tappets are moveing the belts in one piece. Also feel for any feeling like it sticking as you turn it over (Not just the compression) Then do a compression test and go from there. Hope its not too serious

Sounds like it might of siezed (not good) What is the oil and water like? Could of been caused by pump timing out but also low water or oil can cause this if it overheats. If the belt timing is ok talk to an engine reconditioner. Some of them have a periscope to look inside the engine without lifting the head or sump. Unfortuanatly you might be looking for a new engine What was the milage?

Ive heard of that engine doing similar things at around 150000km if the original owner in Japan didnt change the oil properly (at all). How long has he had the car. He might have a valid claim against the dealer if he can prove all was not as well as it seemed when he bought the car. A dealer might even front up with a portion of the bill for good will so tread lightly when you start down this road. Its either bad maintanance. doctored speedo or bad luck. Let us know how he gets on good luck alan
