hey all.
the pump on our 90 2.8 td mu is leaking and has been for about 4months now,and is getting quite bad(only done 100,000kms)... question is,can the seals be replaced by a home mechanic?or is it a diesel mechanic only job? been searching round trying to find an exploded view of a pump but cant find anything....
any help??

If your in Wellington go to Forrest fuels who will replace the seals with the pump in place. They quoted me $150. Other areas might also have diesel specialists willing to do this but most prefer to take the pump out and fully rebuild it at your great cost. Gareth did his useing off the shelf orings to do the top seals for under $20 Unfortuanatly mines leaking from the advance cover so a little worse. Ill send you a copy of the pics he took of the job to your email

Forest fuels in Wellington are doing lots of pumps this way but the only other 2 diesel pump places both say pump has to come off and full rebuild. Forrest just did my pump in place for 280 which is $20 parts rest labour and it doesnt leak any more. The other 2 wanted "800 - 1200" and "800 upwards if I took the pump off" Im going to have to take mine back next week though as it apears the timing might of moved although I know several people that have had the same job with no issues. Your choise which way to go but they now fail wofs for fuel leaks.

All day. 4 hours labour. Aparently the bighorns are slightly harder than Mus. Esspecialy when the fuel filter and power steer resivoiur have been moved to make way for a snorkle.

Ive just got mine back again this time no extra cost. They had set the fuel too low causeing diesl knock, hard starting and gutless esspecialy below 2500 Theyve corrected it now and it must of been wrong even before doing the seals It goes like a cut cat. Mud tyres new found power and wet roads are not a safe combination. Even second gear wouldnt stop uncontroled wheel spin

There was a place in Hamilton advertising full rebuild for around $500 I think, on Trade Me. Can't find any listings for them at the moment but may pay to check back again. Was mentioned in another listing on the forum. They also offered to do it for around $300 if you removed the pump yourself and sent it in. Might be worth checking out. Included all seals and overhaul.

. Mud tyres new found power and wet roads are not a safe combination. Even second gear wouldnt stop uncontroled wheel spin sounds like fun..... thought of sending it to the guy in hamilton, but too sure.... he never told me if its just a top reseal or full rebuild etc...as he gave me 3 different prices..

I got mine done there too.The company is called Vision Complete. They did a good job, replaced all seals and o rings. It's got to go back though as the idling is inconsistant.changes from 1200rpm to motor stalling with no input from me.I've been on to them and they said to bring the truck in and they'ed sort it out.Next time I'm in Hamilton. That price was for supplying the pump.Removal and refitting is extra. Regards,Harry.

If your pump hasn't started leaking yet or only leaking slightly then I would recommend running Morey's upper cylinder lube in your fuel. My pump was leaking and I have a spare ready to go with new seals, but started to use Morey's and the old pump has stopped leaking and been sweet as now for over 5000km. 1 bottle costs around $20 and treats around 500 l of fuel. Can't guarantee it will work in every case but worth a go. Took around 1 full tank of fuel before the leak stopped. Supposedly it will help clear injectors etc too but who knows.
