Checked the old post for info on intercoolers but no luck. What I would like to no is has anyone put a cooler on the front of their MU? I had a look the other day at a new RA Rodeo and their coolers are in front of the radiator. The difference in their engine bay is the have the air filter on the drivers side and battery on the other side. The other thing is they have an electric fan on the front as well. It looks like the MU has more room in the front then the Rodeo. Anyway if anyone has done one be pleased to know how. Bruce.

I seen one fitted close up..
Richard in Wn has done one using an intercooler from a Big Horn. Scoop looks really good on a MU as well.
From what he says it doesnt take that long and is well worth doing.

the 2.8 is easy as the bighorn parts all fit The only catch is that the turbo outlet has to be rotated aprox 60 deg On the 3.1 this isnt possible as the turbo is a sealed unit so the bighorn turbo has to be used. Some people have custom made pipework to fit front mounted intercoolers but theres not a lot of room and they would make simple maintanance things like fan belt replacment far harder.Anouther way would be to use a Subaru intercooler This is an air-water-air type so the top unit just cuts into the current intake and you only have to run water pipes the size of heater hose to the front unit

We fitted a front mounted intercooler onto my Dad's Bighorn a while back. Pretty easy conversion all things said and I'd assume the MU would be reasonably similar. I can post a pic if interested.

Thanks everyone for getting back to me on this one. The reason I was thinking of a front mount one is that I would have to put a scoop on (probably from a Nissan Patrol, about $85) but would then have to re-paint the bonnet(just had it done cost $350). I saw a Subaru one at Rolin imports on the web cost $220, but not sure how to mount one. Yes Stu I would like to see the photo of the one on the Bighorn, and the other thing is I have a turbo off the 2.8 on my 3.1 so no prbs there. Regards Bruce

Its and old pic but shows the concept. Been changed a bit and the stock air intake is scrapped now.

Has anybody ever done a write up on putting a 2.8's turbo and intercooler on a 3.1? Is this a worthwhile project or is the gains not worth the effort? Also does it involve any welding as I can't get ahold of a welder over here. Thanks

I know of an intercooler mounted on top on a 3.1 MU with standard turbo. A rubber pipe out of the turbo (I think it was from the intercooler kit), a mandrel exhaust bend and some clever thinking...... and hey presto- you're intercooled!

Matt's Red MU has a 4JG2 3.1 with a 2.8 turbo and intercooler fitted. Whether he can write as well as being a brilliant mechanic is yet to be seen. LOL ;D J

The Vauxhall/Opel Frontera [English MU] has a front mounted intercooler.

There is nothing magical about fitting the 2.8 Turbo and intercooler, just preparation!!
If you can pick up the complete set of brackets, hose and intercooler it makes the job basically bolt on! If you have a 2.8 then its monkey work, just bolt on the bracket at the back of the block and the one at the front, spin then turbo compressor housing one bolt hole and you are sweet!
If you have the 3.1 then the compressor cant spin but someone did manage to make a piece of pipe that would allow the turbo to still connect witht he intercooler! Just and extra curved pipe!
But if you have time and can just pick up the intercooler, I would have like to source the mounting brackets off a Rodeo rather than the bighorn. The angles are different and as you know fit the MU better than a Bighorn one! The bighorn intercooler sits higher at the back to follow the bonnet slope, but the rodeo is relatively flat. If you are a little skilled with some 5mm plate you should be able to fabricate the mounts yourself and have the intercooler sitting just above the rockercover and would help with the bonnet scoope and shroud!
One day I will finnish mine off completely, only been a year or two since fitting the intercooler and still havebnt done the scoop!! lol but not far off now, just found a spraypainter mate to do the cutting/painting for me!!
Matt.

I'll give it a try with the 3.1 turbo, thanks Matt. If all goes according to plan I'll put up some pics when the scoop and everything is done. Gonna be awhile, suspention is first.

I've been quoted between $250 and $450 at various auto wreckers. The lowest price didn't include the inlet manifold but the standard MU one should be ok.The early Isuzus [non i/c] had a y shaped manifold that won't work with an intercoolier,

Jackaroo World wanted $400.00 for the complete intercooler from the Jack, including scoop, intercooler skirt & plumbing.

$400 seems reasonable to me. I bought a 2nd hand Nissan Skyline GTS-T intercooler from someone on-line for $70 and intend to mount it up front. I think I've had the cooler for 12 months now and still haven't done it. I'm a lazy boy. G.

Recently put an intercooler off a Mitsi Challenger on my 2.8 Bighorn. Used a scoop off a Mirage turbo and opened it up a bit. Doesn't seem to make a scrap of difference to performance. I did use a temp probe to monitor effectiveness - with the scoop covered, intake temp quickly exceeded the 70 c max the probe could handle under boost conditions. I'm guessing 80-90 degs easily reached. With scoop open, it slowly got to 35 after about 5km on full noise. Helps out keeping pistons and oil cooler since the fuel and timing have been cranked up I guess. Has a fan under it too which I have manual control of for those long slow climbs. But by the bum-o-meter, no real gain. Must put the stopwatch on it unde different conditions to check.

Hi team, i have installed a jackaroo (bighorn) intercooler on my mu about a year ago now, im still using the 3.1 turbo all you need to make up as Matt said is a piece of stainless steal pipe shaped in a u, the only hard thing was the first hole i had to drill in the bonet for the scoop. huge power increase and total cost was about $600 aus ill take some pictures and post them.
