Just thought i would let ya's all know we got brand new IHI turbos to replace the factory rhf5 ball bearing turbos, as you will probably already know 90% of the rhf5 turbos let the heatshield go in behind the turbine wheel which takes the turbine wheel out, easily noticed by a whistle or wind down when the car is turned off. The replacement we have is a Vi95 which is servicible. These turbo's fit all 4jg2 4jb1 bighorns from 91 to 97 and MU's, only diff is the mu is non intercooled so the compressor cover sits on a diff angle compared to the bighorn If anyone is interested let me know

Hi Jarrad, was just wandering how you determine that the turbos heat shield is going let go, like you say when you here the turbo still winding down when the motor is turned off. I blow my turbo in the MU sometime ago but cannot remember hearing any noises at all. But I do have the wind down noise in our Wizard, been there since we brought it, done about 3000ks since we had it. So Iam naturally very interested in how long it takes to stuff up. Also what are the IHI turbos worth? in case I have to buy one. Cheers Bruce

They normally let got around the 100k mark the only way to check them is to pull the turbo off and take the exhaust housing off to check the heatshield. On average we would do at least 2 bighorn turbo's a week they had a design floor in them in the fact that the heatshield material they used was to thin, the Vi95 has a different heatsheild which dosent have this problem. The replacement turbo is around the $950nz thats including dreaded tax

This one has done 146Ks, this Vi95 can the housing be turned to accomodate a top mount intercooler? The question I am most interested in, is how long do they last after you hear the turbo still spinning when the motor is turned off? I know it is a hard one but very important to all of us as I have already had a blown turbo but was lucky I was in town when it happened and could drive it to a servo and have it removed. Does anything come off the turbo that can damage the motor if it happens?, (especially at speed) Thank you for this info Iam sure there is a few members a bit more knowledgeable about this problem from your input. Cheers Bruce

The noise is quite a strong whistle for about 5 sec after turning off. I know one Mu that started to make this noise after nudging a sand bank You could here it over 20 meters away. It took a year for the turbo to die which it did in spectacular fashion. Others die in a matter of weeks.

Normally the turbo will lock up solid as the heatshield lets go it takes all the blades of the turbine wheel, but no it wont do anydamage because the turbine is not ceramic like nissan skylines the worst it will do is either smoke its ring off, and lack of power, we have about 30 isuzu turbos sitting on the floor lol all stuffed. Hope this helps

Thats what happened to the one in the MU. Put the fot down and no power but a lot of black smoke. I was told today that there is probably oil leaking past the bearing towards the heat sheild, anyway keep the fingers crossed and hope we have a good Easter, or put her in the shed and take the MU, I wish, have to drop my Mum off at my brothers 200ks away and with all the gear etc not an option. Cheers Bruce
