Engine Mods for Begginers

I want to give my MU abit more power but dont have alot of experience with engines.
But I am keen to learn, and just really want abit more performance from the standard TD engine.
What do you guys think of those things that spiral the air into the combustion chamber for improved efficency? Are they reliable?
What Mods can I do?

1. Better Air Filter (K&N seem to be the peoples choice, I run a finer filter)
2. 3" Mandrel Bent Exhaust (Some say 2.5" is enough. I have a 2.5" and would rather it be bigger)
3. Intercooler

The people that sell those swirly things do the same thing their product does. Swirl hot air to no real effect.
