I was wondering if anyone has or is considering putting the new 3.0 ltr motor into an older truck? I have a 96 Bighorn and have spent a lot of time and money getting the truck how I like it but now the motor is getting old and tired. How hard would it be to put in new motor?

I will be fitting a 1UZ-FE or a 2JZ-GTE to mine if I kill my engine. It is not a daily driver so fuel economy is not such an issue. If it was a new diesel would be on the top of my list. But they are damn expensive here.

New computer required lots of wireing Huge price for the engine and you might have expensive injector problems

The injectors are really bad at cracking... if that happens then what can happen is that the motor runs on the engine old, uncontrollable untill something else goes BANG. found that out as we have a deisel mechanic next to my shop and he was "fixing" a pressure switch and distrubed the injectors.... lets say that it went really well until it ran out of oil......

Its actualy the orings in the injectors that fail. These are subject to a recal and the new ones seam ok. Ive heard of two motors that failed because of this. One was lucky the diluted oil only scored his bores and he got a $10000 recon under its NZ new warrentee. The other one I heard about second hand from an auto sparky. This one took off down the motorway It was an auto so when he managed to get it to slow down the auto just changed down and took off again. By the time he got it to the shop the auto and brakes were stuffed as well as the engine and the driver was described as having lumps in his pants.

Gday Geeves, You have got me curios now, has the 4JX1 ever come out in this country in a new vehicle?
Am refering to your comment re the warranty claim in the previos post on this thread.
If it has then I was wondering about a current recall that holden Aus has on this Engine concerning full replacement of the injectors.
Cheers mate Roscoe

4jx1 is the diesel option in the Holden Monteray and Frontera from about 2000 through to 2004 when they stopped being inported. Im not sure if the Isuzu Bighorn that Holden sold in the one or two years before this had this engine or only the petrol v6. The one with the scored bores was a NZ newMonteray which is a very nice car.It had less than 50000km when it died. Holden is fully covering a recal on NZ new trucks with this engine but is not helping for Jap inports. The IMVDA has a method of checking if this recal has been done overseas and is obtaining parts if it needs doing The owner has to pay labour. This is covered in a separate post along with the procedures that must be followed

I have received the IMVDA parts, it's a new set of sleeves, O-rings and associated gaskets. It was only AUD131 delivered- a largish part of that was the "courier" which took three weeks or about times longer than NZPost. A Holden dealer in Chch quoted around NZD330 for exactly the same kit, although I have to say the parts guy was really helpful, faxing through a parts list and fitting instructions, to two separate fax nos- 16 pages.
I'm having them fitted in a fortnight. I have no idea whether they've been done already, it's better to be safe than sorry. Labour rates are quite low here so it shouldn't cost too much all up. I have no issues with the motor other than poor fuel economy- we used to get good Kiwi dieso here now all that's available is 3rd world rubbish.

I believe too the Wizard (like ours) was sold new in NZ as a "parallel import" with Holden Fronteras. The only place outside Japan to do so.
