This thread is to establish various methods of extracting some extra ponies out of the 4JB1T. ;D I would like to hear the modifications done by members to their beasts. So far I have on my list of to do to Mu: 1) Remove Exahust recycle thingy 2) Big Bore Exhaust (2.5" ?) 3) Intercooler 4) Dyno Tune with an increase in fuel and another few pounds of boost. There appears to be some great results from this sort of modification. I am wondering if anyone has had experience with Snorkles and or other air filters. Jimmy.

No1: Probably but no great gain. No2: Definite gain from the posts I have read and if you go 3" up to the turbo then it fly's. No3: They're a few of these about, if we are talking top mount you really need the bonnet scoop to make them efficient. Safari make a front mount which add's 15% power and sucks $2K from your wallet No4:Will get it running efficiently and probably best to do after the first 3 anyway. Snorkels look good! Yet to see someone in Oz use one, unlike them Kiwi boys who always seem to have their Mu's submerged. I have a Unifilter and it saves money on the filter change and makes the truck sound better. It won't however part your hair differently when you accelerate. ;D J

This is what I would (have done) Jimmy,
Firstly get an aftermarket air filter. I honestly got more of a power due a new filter than any other at the moment about %10. Have a look at the Sydney MU page for aftermarket filters and where to get them,....(thank Justin) this will set you back $120-150
Next thing to do is get the exhaust done, I put a 2.5'' from the first join back (the flexi-joint back is all new). Exhaust guy was worried that if put the full system from turbo, it could have made the oil filter change over extremely hard, he told me that that from flexi joint back (3/4 system) is just as good as a full system. Approx $350-400
Check or place oil to be safe if you are unsure of service history.
Lastly get a dyno tune just make sure that everything is in order. You be able to more Ponies but more likely it a check up on boost pressure and air/fuel ratio. When I did it he didn't get me any more ponies but I got a lot more torque and the white smoke under acceleration is totally gone. Approx $120-$180.
Intercooling,...sure would be nice but I thought the money better spent doing other things, duel batteries and snorkel, also heard that it doesn't give you a great deal more.
I hope this helps Cheers
I'll an eye out for ANOTHER BLUE MU,.....Blue (there are 2 shades of blues around) seems to be the main colour.

How about LPG injection!!! it has been talked about a few times and should give about 15-25% increace in power.... www.globalfuelsolutions.com/

I should be able to fit a Fruunt Muunt Ingertooler for about $500.
So the improvements may be worth it for that price.
The exhaust seems to be the most agreed upon modification.
I was thinking that maybe a snorkle would make a difference bringing in only cold air.
What is the performance benefit of duel batteries?
Or do you mean just for extra capacity?
Mine is electric blue.
I will price up a exhaust system.
PS. If you are in Brisbane and want tires at the right price let me know. I can point you in the right direction.
Jimmy.

Hey Jimmy, My duel battery remark was pure referring to my thoughts that I would rather spend the money getting the extra battery then getting an intercooler. But then again I am trying to build up the MU for camping and touring and therefore power is not my primary concern, I would rather have a cold beer in fridge in the Mu than making a quick dash to the pub,... ;D I did see a nice Blue MU around Wardel/Stewarts Road Ashgrove where I live, I gave a wave but didn't see a response,...oh well I have heard that a snorkel could help in power but I feel the gain would be minimal, but who knows. I heard that the intercoolers only give an extra 5 ish kilowatts. Nice to hear that you are able to get deals on tyres, a couple of mates of mine would be interested but I just got a set 31" MTRs for play only. Cheers

Has anyone got a pricing on that LPG injection system? I think they say it's about 3k installed... but don't quote me on this as I have never asked and this was a figure I have read from one of the sites out there...

The exhaust shop at Nerang Rd Southport Ph: 07 5532 4707 quoted me 400 for a 2.5 Inch Maundrel bent system from the turbo.
Since the turbo outlet is 2.5" I am thinking that their will be limited gains from a 3". Though I can get one Maundrel Bent with a 'double dump' pipe for about $500, so I am of two minds.
Who is using a K&N Filter on the 2.8? Which part number is it? Good results?
Jimmy.

getting rid of that useless exhaust dump pipe adds power....... a 2 1/2" pipe from the turbo straight out the back (no muffler) will add a heap of torque and the turbo spins up 500rpm sooner. An intercooler helps a HEAP!! makes the air a lot cooler... then getting it dyno tuned to add more fuel makes the world of difference!! mine pulls like a petrol engine now.... and thats still 2 pounds under what i intend to run it. Front intercoolers can be bought off ebay for as little as $50.. thats what i paid for mine. Because i have an electric thermo fan, i have used a 9" fan to force feed air through the intercooler when in traffic or long clims in low range under boost..... and it works a treat!! anything you do to increase the amount of fuel added to the combustion chamber, and mods to get exhaust out real fast will turn your 4bj1t into a new engine!! i can accelerate up hils now in 5th that i had to change back to 4th previously...... just make sure it's tuned properly. a back yard job can kill your engine

Hi,guys Lately I've had big problems with my 4jb1 engine [see Faults & Questions/Engine/Idling issues ] acordingly by diesel specialist my engine has very low compression and pump timing was too advanced so he adjusted timing back to the specks and since than my Mu runs very bad [ big loss of power especialy at the low revs and it smokes that bad other drivers behind me are changing lines to avoid clouds of black smoke] I felt embarassed driving it. Yesterday I went back to the mech. to ask him if he can advance timing just little bit to gain bit more of power and maybe reduce smoke a bit.He said don't touch the timing it is perfect now but there is one thing you can do to reduse smoke and I shouldn't tell you that coz it is illegal, you can get rid of EGR and it will reduse smoke radically. Today I saw my mates 2002 model turbo diesel rodeo and surprisingly to me it had 4jb1 engine and no traces of EGR atall [apart from the blocked off hole on the exshaust manifold] so I decided to do small mod to my EGR.I've undone two nuts to separate pipe [which goes from exhaust manifold to inlet manifold] from exhaust manifold and made up thin plate which I put in between to block it off and reinstalled pipe back on so it looks all standard and original. After I started engine I looked for fume leaks. No leaks and no big changes in the engine noise, so I went for test drive. As soon as I released the cluch pedal I noticed BiiiiiiiiiiG diference.Heaps more power at low revs[perfect response all the way from the idling to 4ooo revs]. That small mod transformed my Mu from lazy tractor to sports performance car and guess what,no traces of black smoke behind me at all [unbelievable but true].
I highly recomend this mod to all of you who haven't done it yet. Next weekend I'm going to install oil catch can [$100 Au at Autobarn for huge square ugly one or $120 Au from diesel specialist for small raund compact nice looking one and both should be drained and cleaned after being filled up] coz my air intake sistem is verry oily.

You must have had a stuck or blocked EGR valve.... It's not normal to have that much effect.

You should move to clean green sunny NZ The dealer took my egr off before putting the car on the yard I dont know how it goes with one. How are your compressions now It might be worth driving for a few weeks and seeing if they come back up a bit Egr valve can cause excess soot and this can jam rings. Good luck

Geeves, that's what I'm going to do next.Good friend of my was mechanic back in Europe, and he is suspicious abaut piston rings,he thinks rings may be stuck so next week he will take out injectors and pour lots of WD-40 in to cilinders and leave it for couple of days.My job will be to moove cranckshaft left/right manualy couple times a day. After everything is back together again,I'll go for compression test and will tell you resoults.
JamesW,yes my mechanic asumed that EGR valves may be foulty, but mate, she realy gooooooes now.

I just took your advice and blanked my EGR valves, (amazing what you can do with a tin of Watties spaggetti and a 4" grinder), that is the first modification I've done which has noticably improved the perfomance and reduced the night smoke by 50%. Thanks for the advice Dragan. J

I have made the conersion to a unifilter air filter and a airflow snorkel.
I have also fitted an intercooler and thermo fan this week.
Yet to be tuned and i haven't cut the hole in the bonnet but it pulls much harder now.
I have noticed i don't need to drop back a gear at all on the highway even when towing my jetski.
