G'day Looking into these 4x4s and am so far impressed with what you guys say. One of my mates says the turbo chargers need to be replaced fairly often. Is this true? Is it expensive? I'm in Hobart, is there anyone who knows of service centers down here? Can Holden do it? Cheers

Don't think I would be listening to this mate to often, he could cost you a fortune. The only problem is with the turbo on the 3.1TD motor, I've done one but our other vehicle now has 170ks on it and so far seems ok (touch wood) and a new one could cost you up to $1200.00. There is quite a bit of onfo on this subject here, try search and turbo. Cheers Bruce.

My 2.8 is at 200000km on the original turbo. Ive seen others at up to 400000km. The 3.1 Mu turbo does have a flawed design It uses ceramic bearings that are not replacable so any failure means new turbo and the internal heatsheild gives up around 160000km. The genuine turbo replacement will last this long as well but there is a different turbo with the same spec that lasts forever when you need to change it.

I spose he's full of crap then! I guess its just important when your buying second hand that the turbo charger is ok or been replaced recently. I'm thinking 2.8 anyway so should be ok. Cheers guys.

Hi Rowashby, good to see another potential MU in Hobart. Mine has done 205k on the speedo and turbo is fine, but it has been fitted with a turbo timer for most of it's life. Sure helps protect the turbo when the temperatures normalise before shut down. Also allow mine to idle for about 5 minutes before driving off of a morning. Gives me time to feed the dog and pat the missus (or is that the other way round). Regards PK
