Can this be fixed easily and inexpensively or what? It must be a suspension and steering problem as i have been told they regularly go or leak - mine is leaking quite a bit!
Is it easier to change the p/s unit or can you remove it altogether?

Most likly the seal in where the steering collum attaches is at fault. This can be changed in place but is fiddly. search for other posts on the subject for more info. They are also prone to rust on this shaft which nessetates a full overhaul. Mine cost $700 for the rebuild plus labour to remove and refit and freight to Auckland. On mine they had to rebuild the shaft by metal spraying which cost a little more than most. This was 3 years ago. Theres still evidence of fluid here but fluid consumption is about a teaspoon every 3 months. Second hand boxes can be found at the wreckers but check them carfully and get a good garentee

If you mean the its leaking where the steering colum goes into the box that the steering arms connect to, then it can be done in place, done mine twice now. The seal you want is a tc12447, or 22mm outside diameter, 35mm inside diameter, and 7mm thick. i would recommend going genuine parts as i have replaced 2 seals now and they don't seem to last very long. Let us know if it is this seal you are talking about and i can tell you the easy way to replace it.

yep sounds like the one - it is where the unit bolts in place and the p/s fluid feed goes in through the top - it must be leaking from there as it is clean above the inlet and mucky fromn there down!!!
Do i have to remove the Battery etc to get at it or do i lift it up in the air onto some form of trailer and jack it up in the air - done it that way before - great idea eh!@!!

If it was this seal there would be fluid under the dust cap where the steerting collum attaches which is right at the top. Yours sounds like the hose or hose connector at fault Probably just a washer. You can get to it via the rubber pannel on the inner gaurd or underneath.Be very carfull lying under a car on axle stands

Heeeeheee no my idea is better - onto a car transporter and tilt it back towards the rear and chock the wheels - then lift with jack from front end so it is like a tilt ramp and leave like that!!! lol WON'T / CAN'T GO ANYWHERE!!!

Sounds hard to me, just flick the tire off, and stick your head in, using the appropriate axle stands, etc, you can remove the unit, or replace seals, even change an alternator from here, Like geeves said, sounds nothing major, when my top seal went i could empty the resivor in about 5km's. Clean the unit and then take it for a dirve and see where the oils coming from.

Hi Mulover
I need to repl column shaft seal but I can't figure out how to move the steering column back far enough to get the uni joint off.
Some infinite wisdom with changing these seals would be appreciated

Hi Mulover I need to repl column shaft seal but I can't figure out how to move the steering column back far enough to get the uni joint off. Some infinite wisdom with changing these seals would be appreciated Remove the bolt that clamps the shaft to the spline then just lever the shaft up. The hardest thing I found was lining the hoses back up to the pump

Sounds like a plan geeves, i'll do it some time. Any hows if you got the patience you can do it in place. Flick off the shaft, completely removing the bolt as pig said (trick for new players), take the dust cap off, then using a battery drill drill a wee hole big enough to get a self tapping screw started near the out side of the seal, then use the screw to pull the seal out, clean the unit, slide new seal in, reassemble and your away.

Do i drain the unit first too?
I am wanting to drain and fill with that prestone power steering stop leak as it says it is / can be used solely in the unit and i presume is better quality as it appears to have a higher rating than the p/s fluid in there currently!

OH SHITE!!!!!!
It is the power steering line going into the top that is leaking - is this more serious??

either the line itself or the sealing washer Shouldnt be too bad but untill you undo things you never know. No info in the book so cant be hard

Hahahaahaahahahahahhaahahhahaaaaaaa Panic over
I took off wheel and took off that flap cover thing to find out i could turn the frigging line in screw/nut by HAND so i got out my trusty 17mm ring open ender and tightened the prick and the one next to it and stuffed somem more p/s stop leak in there - and no leaking as of yet!
