It's probably been covered, but here I go anyway. Raising the horsepower on a 3.1 seems to head along the turn up the injector pump and increase boost route. With the later electronic injection system, I'm told that there is no simple turn up the fueling screw on the pump. Is there another basic, (ie doesn't need a mechanic and rolling road) method of trying this and if this is possible, how do I tweak the turbo up a lb or two? I did it a couple of years ago on my old Pajero and it was pretty simple, but on a quick assessment under the bonnet, I couldn't see anywhere obvious on my Bighorn. All this leads me to believe that the electronic 3.1 is not as easy to play with. Am I right?

to do electronic you have to use electronic,so my suggestion is use a signal interceptor or piggy back to get more power.

I've looked but haven't been able to find one. Plenty for the later model 3.0

How about turning up the boost? It it easily done? I would think it can be done, but it's certainly not as obvious as it was on the old Pajero. I know it's not worth doing unless you've got more fuel to feed the flame, but as I've just replaced the injectors and I'm still seeing some diesel smoke, I suspect I'm running rich anyway.

Visited the local diesel shop that tweaked my mates electronic Prado, they have done a couple of electronic 3.1TDs. With an intercooled 3.1 with 2.5" exhaust they get about 88kW (approx 120hp) at the wheels running about 14psi boost. The only drawback is the idle speed comes up as you increase the fuel flow. This means the horsepower is limited by the idle speed. In this case they usually set the idle to 1000rpm. Once the engine has been rebuilt on my Wizard (and intercooled) it is going in to be tweaked! He also told me about one they tuned for a local plumber that has a front mount intercooler and all the pipework is copper.
Turning up the boost is usually achieved by placing some washers between the wastegate actuator and and its mount.

That extra 250 rpm is a big pain when you want to crawl, especially with 33" tyres. Harry.

What's the name of the diesel shop you are talking about Justin? I'm from Tauranga too, so if they're any good, it's good to know which places can be relied on.

Tauranga Diesel. Peter is the boss there. I personally haven't used them but know plenty who are satisfied with them.
