Hi all!
Im new to this but im looking at getting a 2.8 TD engine to fit into a landrover 90! I have heard that they are pretty bullet proof but i was just wondering what the data for this engine is as i cant seem to find it? what power and torque does it throw out? (in Hp and lb/ft please,as im simple!) Also are tyhere any weaknesses i need to watch for?

in standard form about 100 horses but easy to tweek for anouther 10 or 20. Not sure on torque. Remember these are diesel horses which although they are measured the same way do a lot more work. some quick info on the engine here english.auto.vl.ru/catalog/isuzu/bighorn/1989_12/13616/Its metric so you will have to convert

The 2.8 standard non-intercooled is 109hp (110ps) and 225 nm torque ex japan - intercooled model about 5hp more. This data from several good sites, with hp measured at flywheel.
Not hard to tweak them up to 130 -150hp. Mine has been running at 155hp for years - done nearly 100,000ks at this level of tuning, and is still in top condition at 220ks.
The 2.8 TD is a very good diesel - one of the best to come from Japan. Has no particular weaknesses though it cannot be overheated, and must have regular oil changes at 5000ks. Will do big ks if well looked after - clubmates have them at 300 and 400+ks going well, and engine recon outfit tells me they have had them in at 500ks. Some have a breathing problem and puff a bit of blue, but this is easily fixed by fitting a breather kit or catch can system. Many die from overheating after burst coolant hoses - something to keep an eye on.
A few people fit them to toyotas and landrovers and it would make your rover go well, but I guess its only worth doing if the motor/gearbox/diff compatibility is reasonably straightforward. The Nissan LD28 is a more common swap for rovers but while quite a good engine it doesn't have much grunt at all. A good 2.8 isuzu would be far better if there are not too many technical issues.

Does landrover use a separate transfer case like The suzukis and hiluxes? If so easy way would be to get a 2wd rodeo with this engine and 5 speed box. Then just make a adapter shaft to attach to the landrover transfer case. Ive seen a 3.6 non turbo isuzu engine in a series 2 land rover and it went ok

I seem to recall some landrovers fitted with the 4jb1 - maybe not the 4jb1T - might have been army vehicles - poss Aus ones. Anyone know about this?

Not saying they weren't but I've not heard of this as a semi factory offering. Jaguar Rover Australia put the 4BD1 (3.9litre) into into late Series 3s & 110s up till the time Land Rover came out with their 200 TDi motor in about 1989-90. AFAIK, all the Aus Army Perentie contract 4 & 6WD Land Rovers have versions of this motor, turboed in the 6x6s. I've always thought the 2.8 would be a better option than the 2.5 LR diesels, it may not be quite as torquey from factory but thats easy fixed & much more reliable. Steve.
