Whent to the local Castrol agent looking for some advice on there products for my 3.1TD Isuzu MU they phoned the Castrol tech deparment there advice went like this. Engine Oil : RX Super, 8.1Lts. Gearbox : CRB-40, 2.7Lts. Diff Oil : LSX-90, 3.0Lts. Also spoke to them about a engine oil treatment as the oil is very thick & black. Got Redex engine flush good for older turbo deisel engines. Will be doing the full system this weekend. Dave

My 88 swb takes a little less than 5 litres engine oil and after some experimenting with gearbox oils in my box - which made the stick hard to shift - I have gone to auto transmission oil for the gearbox and it works perfectly. This was a tip from other Isuzu owners. Mike A.

A lot of Jap gearboxes do use auto trans fluid and theres now reason not to use it apart from cost. The manufacturers recomend normal engine oil of the same sae rating as the engine but the thing to watch is that you dont use an oil with to much anti friction additive as it prevents the synchros working properly ie hard shifting. Im useing Mobil 30 40 at present in tne gearbox and transfer case which works fine and is only $8 for 4 liters. Remember also that the transfercase is filled separatly (transfer case is very noisy in low range with no oil)

Serviced my 3.1TD MU on Saturday the engine took 7.4lts of oil. I think the manual was quoting 3.1's with an engine oil cooler which is why they said 8.1lts. Could not find were to fill the gearbox help would be good. Dave

both transfer case and gearbox fill points are on the right hand side. the transfer case is on the back of the casting near the top the geabox is on strenghthening ridge forward of the transfer case attachment and aprox halfway up. 7.4 liters in the engine Anouther good reason to keep the 2.8 which only holds 5 liters including the filter

According to manual. 3.1tdi 4JG2-TC engine. Factory fill or rebuilt fill: 7.1 liters With filter change: 6 liters Without filter change: 5 liters.
Manual Transmission: 2.95 liters Transfer case: 1.45 liters
Auto Transmission: 8.6 liters Transfer case: 1.45 liters
Coolant: 8.6 liters
All the diesel Trooper I owned including the UBS52 2.2L C223 engine, UBS55 2.8L 4JB1-T engine and UBS69 3.1L 4JG2-TC engine uses ENGINE OIL in the manual transmission and transfer case. DO NOT use gear oil which tends to be too thick and may make gear changing very difficult especially in the lower ratio.
Hope that settle the matter.

CRB-40 is an engine oil specified by Castrol for the gearbox alot of guys use the same engine oil in their gearbox.

CRB-40 the specs look right for the gearbox except it is a little heavy but in Brisbane this wont be a problem.
