Had my MU's 4JB1-T's timing belt replaced sometime last month. I used Gates T844. Does this belt have the same no. of teeth as the Gates T966.
Reason why I'm asking is because right after the belt change, my engine sounded its having fuel knock. Though the mechanic who changed the belt swears he didnt miss a tooth during re-assembly. The old belt had square teeth and so does the T844.
I saw at Dave's site (www.nsw.clubisuzu.com ) that the T844 was meant for the 4JG2 and the T966 for the 4JB1

I thought thr differance was that the 966 had round teeth but could be wrong. Do you have the old belt? It might be worth opening up the timing cover to check.

Just counted the no. of teeth of my old t-belt. it has 119. (this has isuzu markings w/ part no. 8943806790 power grip 119ZB32) Am too lazy to open up the timing belt cover hehe.. Instead I'll dropby the auto supply and borrow a gates T844 and also count its teeth. Though the spare parts man said the 4JB1 and 4JG2 uses the same belt. its just a matter of round or flat teeth their concerned. They dont have the T966 on stock

T844 has square teeth.T966 has round.Even 1 tooth difference in length would show up during tensioning.I haven't seen a t966 belt on a 4jb1 motor.4jg2 maybe?the only way to advance the timing is to either turn the injector pump or slip a tooth while changing the belt.I suppose if the belt wasn't tensioned properly it might allow the timing to advance a little. It's not good anyway because the loose belt will eventually jump a few teeth and the valves will try and go through the pistons. My 93 2.8 had a T966 in it and my 94 3.1 had a T844. Yarno's 2.8 which was around the last produced before the 4JG2's came out had a T844. So I would say that they are cross compatible but best idea is what comes out, (if it's original), should be what it's replaced with. J

My old belt has the markings Gates power grip 5306-45119x32mm. This was replaced by a t844. One other thing that comes to mind is that if your mechanic undid the large bolt in the center of the crack pully instead of the 4 small ones this may of come loose. If it has it might of damaged the keyway in the spacer that the pully bolts to. This will cause a knock as the pully hits the timing cover. Its a big bolt and needs to be torqued to 152ft/lb which requires gorrila arms or a long breaker bar. The flywheel needs to be locked to tighten this bolt. Easy in a manual as you just put it in gear Not so easy in an auto
