Anybody know which mark on the balancer (there are four) is TDC? Just need to remove pump to do a few seals and was going to re-time it properly when i put it back on. It's in a 12/98 built Rodeo.

Balancer?Your Rodeo should have gear driven timing.I have a worn out 96 Rodeo motor.I want to swap the gears to a 90 mu motor. It looks fairly straight forward [all the recesses, tapped holes and spigot holes are already there].I tried to set the gears on the stuffed motor at TDC but gave up after about 50 manual turns of the crank.None of the marks would line up in conjunction with the others. The relationship seemed to change [doesn't make sense, I know] but that's the way it looked. Also found that the spigot on the first idler gear journal is broken so I can't put it all back together until it's fixed or replaced. So if you find out how to set the timing I'd really like to know. Regards,Harry.

I didn't have all the front off, just the pump out. There is timing marks on the balancer, and the timing case. I set the pump timing to these marks. Used dial guage and adaptor in the rear of the pump and set to factory specs (0.50mm @ 12' BTDC) which resulted in a motor that refused to fire (ran on brakeclean down the intake tho) so valve timing and compression was ok. Pulled the rocker cover and got close to TDC compression via rocker position, marks on balancer were a long way out. Pulled No1 injector, used probe and dial guage to find accurate TDC and remarked balancer (a good 90' from origional marks ). Refitted pump, aligning pump timing mark to mark on inspection hole in front housing, set pump timing via dial guage to 1.42mm @ TDC. Blead pump and injectors, turn key, started first time ;D. The balancer has obviously spun the outter ring giving me a dodgy TDC mark. Had this happen quite a bit when i used to play with Holden Red 6's Basics is, set motor to TDC compression on No1, fit pump into housing aligning the mark (o) on the pump gear to the mark on the inspection hole in the front cover. This will get you close. From there you will need the tool/adaptor/dial guage that fits into the (plugged) hole between injector tube fittings to set correct timing. From what i could find this is 0.50mm @ 12' BTDC. I used 1.42mm @ TDC as i had no 12' BTDC mark when i remarked the balancer. Hope this all makes sense. Rick
