I see on the Castrol NZ web site that for the 4JG2TC engine fitted in the 3.1lt Isuzu Trooper under crankcase they recommend either Castrol Protec 15w 40 or Castrol GTD diesel oil. My question is why do we use diesel engine oil? Is there any good reason why I should not use Protec in my diesel Mu just as I do in my Daihatsu Rocky (1.6 lt EFI petrol) or my Nissan Maxima?
David.

Simple diesel oil has a lot more detergent type additives to take care of the extra soot build up in the oil. I dont know protec but if it says on the packet suitable for diesel engines and has a cf or better rating then why not. Oil companies normaly make specialised oils for petrol and diesel engines as the conditions inside the engines are quite differant.

Gday davidM, Modern high speed diesels that are fitted to cars and SUVs will run fine on good quality engine oil that is non diesel specific. Just check that the label says that its suitable for diesels. If in doubt, ring the Oil company Tech Support number which is normally on the label somewhere and ask if its suitable for your engine.
All low speed diesels (normally max out at about 2,500 rpm or less) that are fitted to anything else such as most trucks need a specific Diesel oil.
My vehicle uses the 4JX1 engine and I have to use a synthetic 5W 40 oil which is a top grade oil.
Cheers
