What are peoples thoughts on mineral or synthetic oil in a "not new" motor ? I have just started running Delo400 which seems okay. Have changed fuel supplier and also brand of air filter so performance/economy increase may be due to that, not sure yet. Doing 620km's/week 90% of which is on the highway at 110kmh. Delo400 doesnt seem to go the distance in my truck. After 3000k's it rattles like 5000k's on mineral oil. truck has >290,000 + my guess is 60,000 speedo rewind and the question is, can the extra cost of the Delo400 be justified or is my donk possibly past getting any benefit from it ?

I run Castrol RX super in my 2.8td and am happy with it. I used to use Valvoline all fleet (got it cheap ,ie free, from work), but found the rodeo used to smoke a bit on startup with this oil so went back to RX super. Cant see the advantage in synthetic engine oils, even Yamaha specified Castrol grandpre in their R6 bike (over 200hp per litre output!) which is just good old GTX2 without the friction modifyers in it (stuffs the wet clutch). Have used both mineral and synthetic in the gearbox tho, mineral gives better shift due to synchros needing friction to work propperly, but synthetic may give better bearing life.

Ive heard of it leaking past old seals but I was useing delo when my rear main started leaking and a new seal didnt fix it so cant blame the seal. Over here we can get delo as cheap as any other oil so why not use the best oil you can get

Another vote for RX Super . We just had a 160hp motor at work blow an oil line and seize. It runs RX after pulling it down I was surprised that the only thing wrong was the pistons had started to weld themself to the bore all the bearings hade no sine of damage from the lack of oil so the RX must have good lubricating properties

I used Delo 400 for a while but was using a bit so I went to Delo 500 (now called Silver) and hardly used any. But now with the Wizard it uses Castrol Magnatec and it runs a lot quiter than the MU, so Iam thinking of using Magnatec in the MU see if it runs any quiter. One thing I have found though is that Magnatec is more advailable than Delo, Big W and Super Cheap sell Magnatec and they have some good deals going with them as well. Cheers Bruce
