Ladies and Gents, Just purchased myself a 2.6 petrol mu and the bloody clutch is slipping like crazy. Basically i was wondering if anyone knew where abouts i could possibly find a workshop manual for the petrol Mu's or any information from past experiences with changing the clutch would be greatly appreciated ;D. With thanks, Greg

Mine is a diesel but the clutch started slipping the other day when I was towing a big load of firewood, got a price from local garage to fix it, with clutch kit will cost about $1000 , they reckon there is a few hours labour involved by the time they get the transfer case off etc

I don't know why they want to take the transfer case off. It's part of the gearbox and will come off at the same time. Harry.

i think its about 8hrs woth of labour or there abouts, and depending on if your flywheel needs to be taken off to be machined aswell..our clutch kit was $180 from bnt.but we didnt have to pay for it or the labour...

Make sure you get the rear main oil seal changed at the same time as it might be the cuase of it all.
Hate to see you do all this work and for it to slip again straight away.
Question: Why is it slipping? It's common for these engines to have breather problems and pressureise the crankcase and blow oil out the rear main seal on the clutch. Well for the diesels, I don't know the petrol engines. Fix the breather and the slipping goes away... I know which is cheaper.

If youb need to but one do some checking round for the clutch kit from various parts suppliers - and when you do always ask for a club/trade price. When looking at doing my clutch, price for a release bearing, spiggott bearing, clutch plate and pressure plate (all you need) varied from $225 to $500. The $225 kit was from Partmaster spares in Chch and is an aussie Daikin clutch which seems fine. Do get a rear main seal at the same time - about $22 trade. Labour is about 5 hours for someone who knows what they're doing. Machining flywheel an advantage - just a matter if you can get it done in the time your truck is apart.
Try and track down the cause first. And do standard clutch test. Start up truck and put into first gear and pull handbrake on. Then at idle revs (i.e. no throttle) slowly let clutch out and see how far clutch travels out before motor stalls, or if your handbrake is like mine, the truck just drives away. If clutch plate is stuffed, the clutch will take right out towards the end of your pedal travel. If ok, vehicle will stall/move off maybe halfway through pedal travel. And if it tests ok here, then you can look for another cause for clutch slippage - a bit of oil dripping into clutch housing etc
Where abouts are you.

Change the gearbox front oil seal at the same time .It's small and cheap. Harry.

Thanks for the great amount of replies. To answer some of the questions, the clutch is about as good as a s*&t fart in the jocks... shes knackered, releases right at the end of the travel. I know how to change the clutch in a front wheel drive galant (lol) but i have never owned a 4x4 so im assuming it will be a little bit more difficult. Any idea where i could get diagrams as to what pull off from where? Cheers guys, Greg

Tressie If you managed a fwd clutch you will find this quite simple except for one thing. The gearbox ways as much as yours and my weight combined and possibly a little more. You need a good jack to suport it. There is a set of manuals at www.gmail.comlogin as isuzunz pass 4jb1turbo grab the trooper 2 or the TFS manuals first These are the only ones that cover the 2.6 engine. The clutch is pretty much the same on all isuzus

usually if the oil seal is gone like ours was your clutch would be soaked in oil and needs to be replaced regardless...thats how we got the warranty co. to pay for it..hahahahaha
