I have a 1996 3.1D Bighorn (Lotus) with a dead 4JG2 EFI engine. Head is unrepairable. Can anyone suggest what may be the better option, either repair (highest quote so far is $8,000.00) or replace (quoted second hand 3 month warranty $4,000.00)? Also can anyone recommend a good workshop in the Manawatu area? Thanks in advance Jonalan

Can't see it being that much just for a new head and labour to fit it. should be under $2000. New engine could also be worth while but can get a lot more expensive with labour costs for the installation unless you are going to do the work yourself. not particularly hard to do an engine change, takes about a day with 2 people working away. Other bonus of new engine is that you then have the old one as spare parts with whatever accessories are on it. Hope you get it sorted

as a quick comparison a mates hilux (2.8 non turbo) just blew a head Cost was 1800 to buy head 4000 total as they also did the cambelt and tensioner rebuilt radiator and replaced all hoses. What is the milage on yours and was it running well beforehand. 8000 would be full recon which might not be nessecsary. Ring your holden dealer for a price on the head to get some idea of what it should cost.If your motors good otherwise then repair is the best option

Hi,
have same car and also blew engine. Not sold in SA or ZIM so had a chap ( can give name and details on request) replace with a reman 2.8 TD keeping my intercooler. So far ( about 3000 kms) the car is noisier but considerably less lazy and pulls harder. It also seems faster. 2.8 engien was cheaper than repairing mine of course and having broken the crankshaft I wouldn trust it anyway.
Hope this experience helps you.

Thanks, sorry I didn't mention that one of the cylinders is shot hence the high repair cost. I would consider the 2.8 but will probably sell the bighorn once its running again.
