Hi All,
I don't know much about diesels but I've been needing to top up my oil between changes(5000km). Most times it gets to empty on the dipstick. I understand that diesels do use oil but this seems excessive to me. It doesn't matter if it's highway driving or offroad. It doesn't blow smoke and theres no major leaks. Any help on this would be great. Sorry it's a 3.1td with about 150k-180k on it.(not sure on k's as not original motor)

Diesels should only use the same oil as a petrol. First check the oil filler for fumes with the engine running and up to temp. If there are lots of fumes etc then a catch can might help. If not your choises are valve guide seals turbo seals or rings. When turbos go they go completly so there would be lots of smoke and far higher oil use. Other 2 are a bit harder to diagnose. If there is a smell of oil on start up its probably the valves but no promises

I too have been concerned about oil consumption lately but i've discovered something fairly interesting. When i fill the engine up with oil to about halfway (the sticker says never fill it to full or you'll blow your turbo apparently) it drinks the oil in barely 500km and goes down to about 2mm above min. After a couple of times i decided to just leave it on min for a while and it hasn't used any oil at all for a thousand km's now. Certainly worth a try

We know you never fill isuzus past half way on the dipstick but I remember talking to an isuzu diesel specialist about proper oil levels years ago, and he said the motors will often 'use' a bit of oil until they find their own level and then tend to sit there. May be what you are finding - and could be due to any number of factors like efficiency of breathing, and degree of pressurisation etc.

No isuzu should ever be filled above the full line not so much because of the oil burning but more because it will leak from the rear and sometimes the front main seal. There is no drain in the bell housing so eventualy this oil could get to the clutch. A 2mm hole in the bottom of the bell housing will reduce this though but is still small enough to be ok in river crossings. Mine drops from full to about half way in the first 2000km but stays there till the next change and this is with 200000km hard life under its belt
