basicaly the same motor as the jackeroo al;though Ive been told they have a gear drive for the cam where the mu uses a belt. Its a single cam but the cam is in the block not the head. The much later 4jx1 engine has double overhead cam but you would know if you had one of these. As your in aus I cant help on the gaskets but one of our Austrailian members should be able too

ok thanks i thought that was the case, i just saw somewhere that the 4jg2 had shoc which confused me. i think i may have a blown head gasket, my poor old beast has been through a fair bit i rolled it a few months ago , i tried to start it and it had hydraulic lock so i removed the glow plugs and pumped the oil out. i got it started and it ran but was very smokey and rough but it cleared up. ive started it a few times since and it has a miss, and its puffing out white smoke, tonight im goin to take out the radiator and get it fixed so i can pressurise the system to see if i have a gasket issue any advice will be appreciated

If its had a hydrolic it might also of bent con rods etc A compresion test will show this up. Also what does the whit smoke smell of It might be oil still in the engine or diesel from a clogged injector or bad rings The list goes on. good luck

The Jackaroo 3.1td is the same as the MUs, when I ask for part I just say it for the Jackaroo 92 till 97. This includes timing belt which they both have. Cheers Bruce

All the diesel engines I have ever come across are side cam. Can you get OHC diesel motors?
Some MU's did have petrol engines. I think they were 3.2l V6. These might be OHC.
Cheers, AK.

A lot of diesels are ohc but these are mainly newer models. The 3.0 engine used in bighorns from 98 mus from 99 and newer rodeos is dohc. The later Toyota engines are also ohc as are newer nissans
