Bighorn 3.1TD (4JG2) Subject: Timing belt replacement.
On removal of the timing belt cover I notice that the injection pump sprocket does not have a timing belt guide fitted. The camshaft sprocket does have one fitted though.
Should it have a guide? The sprocket has the right bolt/screw holes etc. I've read in the 'Fix it' section instructions on how to replace a timing belt for Isuzu MU 2.8TD (4JB1T), which illustrates that there is one fitted. . I would presume that apart from the different c.c. they would be much alike. I know for a fact that they use the same parts for the idler/tensioner. Or has the design of the 4JG2 engine done away with this requirement?
Any assistance would be grateful. Thanks Stuart

I have changed the timing belt on my old 4JB1T and on my current 4JG2 MU and it was pretty much the same as far as I remember, other than I couldn't find the LHS side hole in the sproket to put the 8mm bolt in to lock the 4JG2 one, so I just used the one RHS bolt and was careful not to move the guides when fitting the belt. That was 30,000 K's ago so I guess it worked. J

See my post today on timing belt change. Yes there should be a belt guide on both cam and injector pulley. The lock hole on the cam sproket is hidden until you remove the guide plate then it will be in the 2 o'clock position with #1 cyl. at TDC compression.
