Yes MU's have a timing belt, they need to be changed every 100000km, and it will either be a Gates T844 or T996. If the Fuego pickup is the same as the Australian Rodeo it will have a chain instead of the belt.

If it has a plastic cover on the front of the engine that all the fan belt pulleys pass through then it has a belt. I think the only engines with chains were made before 1988 or the Austrailian sourced ones for the Jackeroos and Rodeo utes. Even then its not that simple as some Ausi ones have belts

The T Belt light is supposed to come on when you turn the key on, but should go out once running. This allows you to check the bulb is still good. If the light glows all the time then the T belt is due to be replaced.

If your 2.8 motor has a ribbed plastic cover, black or dark grey it has a timing belt. if it has a front cover like this it has timing gears. I have never heard of any of these engines having timing chains but would like to have info if anyone knows they did for sure. The later 2.8 rodeos had engines that looked like this one, with timing gears. HTH Steve.
