Hi everyone, My partner has a 93 isuzu bighorn 3.1 diesel auto that was going great until 3 weeks ago. We were coming back from holiday & fueled up 1/2 hour from home, but when we pulled out of service station immediately noticed a massive trail of black smoke & loss of power to 70 km (we were pulling a trailer) so crawled home. Once home I discovered your site & read through some forums to give a clue as to what it could be. I found some info on EGR and thought wheres the harm, so hubby disconnected the 2 hoses to the inlet manifold (i think) and this seemed to fix the problem, vehicle regained power and no more smoke...Yeeha, or so we thought, she ran great for 2 weeks then blow me over the same problem has started again. Have just replaced air filter & about to give an oil change, replace fuel filter. Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated, has any-one had similar problem? Want to cover all bases before booking into a specialist. Cheers, Gina.

Have the turbo checked. Could be the bearing ready to give up the ghost. Usually they just stop working though. Cheers Bruce

Could be injectors but we are all guessing without seeing. A trip to the mechanic would be a good idea

Hi again, isuzu is off to the mechanics next week, but still would like to hear any opinions. Hubby's keen to have a go at sorting it himself (he wont let it get the better of him). Vehicle isn't overheating or making any strange noises & turbos working fine.......its just frustrating when you cant find the problem, he always does his own mechanical work but this has got him miffed. cheers

Check the vacumme hoses. You might of dislodged one These control the pump etc. Black smoke indicates poorly burnt fuel. Either going in to late ie timing out although this would cause overheating. pump faulty, or injectors blocked and not spraying correctly. Also low compression could cause this although there would be other pbvious signs

When my Bighorn did this, it turned out to be the EGR valves, so disconnected/blocked them off, but it looks like you have covered most of the obvious things, so may be time for the mechanic....

Hi again, just an update on the state of 4x4. Has been checked by a mechanic & diagnosis was a blown turbo, when we tested it, could move impellers freely by hand so thought it was ok..... so much for diy. Unsure on the next step but will probably go with a new serviceable 3.1 replacement $1500.00 fitted, have looked at 2nd hand but with the costs involved would hate to have a repeat experience. PS: did a complete removal of the EGR before sending to the mechanic as this wasn't functioning properly.......can't comment on an improvement until the turbos replaced. I would just like to thank everyone for their advice & congratulate you on the great site and information available.
