Hi, what sort of mileage are you guys getting? (94 bighorn 3.1T) How many litres is a full tank?
On a trip I went the other day I got around 500ks to a full tank, how does that measure up with others.
If a full tank is around 80L then I'm getting around 16L per 100ks. is that right?
I'm getting my auto flushed soon so will interesting to see the difference it makes.
It doesn't smoke a lot and seems to pull ok although the gears tend to jump around abit when you don't want them to.

Dont worry about the tank size when working out ecconomy. Only the amount that it takes to fill after the trip and a full tank when you start is important.

Thats worse than me, and I am unhappy. I am getting 12l/100km on my 3.1 Bighorn. Previously had a 2.8 engine fitted which gave me 10.3l/100km.
presently doing a test adding 1.5ml acetone per litre diesel to see if I can get better atomisation as she smokes quite a bit on acceleration.

As geeves says, fill the tank, set the trip meter to zero and run untill yr next fill. However it doesn't matter if you don't run it untill empty. Fill it up again and how much you put in is how much you have consumed. Use the same pump if possible so it fills to the same point. A tank is a very unreliable method. At empty there can be a reserve of 15l for exmaple, or perhaps like many of us it's dented and the capacity dropps a few more liters.
Trooper, the smoke (I assume is black) is unburnt fuel. If black is lack of oxygen. This unburn fuel respresents bad economy and $. Wind down the fuel a bit to remove the smoke, or at least reduce and your economy will improve.

I have long intended to run my tank dry to find out how far I can go on road after the fuel warning light comes on but have never got around to it. However, I normally get around 500km on sealed roads. This would probably be 60/40 town/long distance ratio. Off road goes all to hell as engine runs at idle for extended periods without travel. On long distances I have achived 560km. Clogged air filter stuffs everything. Hope this helps.

well going on my last fill which was the trip above. It still works out to about 14L/100kms.
Seems to be quite a bit. But it is also very similar to mudman.

How do you drive and what tyres are you running. Bighorns have the airodynamics of a shed so if you drive fast ecconomy goes through the floor. Also bigger tyres use more fuel although some of this is an illusion. Large tyres result in an under reading spedo so your 500km might be 550 or more km but also the 3.1 realy suffers ecconomy wise with large tyres

My 3.1 Auto is getting around 550km for 70L of diesel. It's been getting about 13L/100 for the last year or so. I'm not happy with it as I used to get about 10L/100km - 800km range is fantastic! I tried diesel fuel treatment / injector cleaners with no impact. I replaced the air cleaner, and this might need changing again, must check, but the new one had no impact. The engine is down on power a little I think. It blows just a tiny bit of smoke on startup and maybe a bit of black smoke on full throttle, but otherwise no problems. I can't get the little cap of the fuel adjustment screw on the pump so haven't played with that yet It's due for a service now so I'll discuss with my mechanics and see if they've got any ideas. Ciao, Graham.

"I can't get the little cap of the fuel adjustment screw on the pump"
Some pliers to grab it and pull should work. Wriggle it back and forth. Lever of something if you can. You may also crimp or bend the cap a little but you won't harm the pump or screw underneath. It's not easy I know, it took me a while the first time.

You don't mention what you drive. Like I said, I previously had a 2.8 DT in the bighorn, now the correct 3.1 DTI. The consumption has increased from 10.3 to 12 l/100km. The 2nd engine has different injectors and fuel pump.
I am getting more power and torque, so would expect an inc in fuel, but is 12l/100km normal for the 3.1 engine in the bighorn? The roofrack would also add drag to a standard bighorn.

I just filled up the MU on 610Klms and it took 62L so about 10L /100klms. Not bad considering the way it gets driven.

The 3.1 is indirect injection which is less efficiant but quieter and smoother. Its always going to use a little more juice but otherwise its still a nice engine.
